New Open World Co-Op Survival Game on Steam is RDR2 Meets Valheim

Newly-revealed game The Legend of California looks like a combo of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Valheim, and could very well become the next big hit on Steam. Steam is home to all kinds of survival games, with one of the most popular undoubtedly being Valheim. A massive co-op survival game inspired by Norse mythology, Valheim has enjoyed immense success ever since it first entered early access all the way back in 2021.

While there are those holding out for Valheim‘s long-awaited 1.0 release, the early access version of the game is still feature-rich and easy to lose dozens of hours in. Whether one wants to spend their time building bases, fighting bosses, or simply exploring the game world, Valheim is stuffed full of worthwhile things to do. Those that have played Valheim and enjoy it may want to keep their eye on The Legend of California, which looks like it may scratch the Valheim itch while simultaneously appealing to fans of western games like Red Dead Redemption 2.

The Legend of California is a Survival Game from Overwatch Creator Jeff Kaplan

The Legend of California is the next game from Jeff Kaplan, the former Blizzard developer who created Overwatch and abruptly left the company in 2021. Kaplan recently resurfaced and revealed that he has been working on The Legend of California for years. The Legend of California is an open world action-survival game with first-person shooter combat that is set in a fictional version of California during the Gold Rush era. The western setting gives it serious Red Dead Redemption 2 vibes, while much of the core gameplay looks like it will appeal to fans of games like Valheim.

Like Valheim, The Legend of California features a huge open world with distinct biomes that are full of resources for players to collect. These resources can be used to craft items and prepare meals, just like in Valheim, with players also encouraged to build structures. Some specific structures called out on The Legend of California‘s official Steam page are ranches, mines, and stables. It seems anyone that enjoys the collecting, crafting, and building aspects of Valheim will definitely want to make sure that The Legend of California stays firmly on their radar.

Of course, what sets The Legend of California apart from Valheim is its western setting, but also its focus on first-person shooter combat. The Legend of California‘s world is full of PvE encounters for players to tackle, with online multiplayer servers that also allow for PvP fights. The Legend of California players will have the option to form a company with up to three other players to progress through the massive survival game together in co-op, and it’s worth noting that the PvP portion of the game is completely optional.

When is The Legend of California Coming Out?

Unfortunately, no release date has been announced for The Legend of California at the time of this writing. All we know is that it’s in development by Jeff Kaplan and his new Kintsugiyama studio, with Dreamhaven (best known for Sunderfolk) serving as the publisher. However, it definitely looks promising, and it will be exciting to see if it can live up to Valheim and other games in the survival genre.

Kaplan’s track record alone should make fans feel confident that The Legend of California stands a strong chance of being a memorable experience. During his time at Blizzard, Kaplan worked on Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos, World of Warcraft, The Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King. He also worked on the ill-fated Titan MMO, as well as the critically-acclaimed Overwatch, which even won Game of the Year in 2016. Time will tell how The Legend of California stacks up compared to Kaplan’s previous games.
