Brand New Day Trailer Shows Spidey’s New Powers

Brand New Day Trailer Shows Spidey’s New Powers

After leaking in the most incomprehensible form back in December, and then Sony officially releasing it in two-second increments for the last interminable 24 hours, we finally have a sensible version of the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The fourth film in Tom Holland’s quadrilogy within the MCU is due out in July, and the young man is joining Tobey Maguire in getting totally gross in-wrist web production.

While we get to see the movie’s villains, heroes, and a fair few stunts, the real focus of the trailer is on Spidey’s sadness at losing all his loved ones (at the end of 2021’s No Way Home, to save the multiverse Peter erased himself from the world’s memory) while simultaneously appearing to enter a sort of Pokémon-like evolutionary phase. It seems Parker is in a form of metamorphosis, becoming something new. And that involves gaining the ability to fire webs not from shooters attached to his wrists, but from his wrists themselves. Yup, he’s going all 2002.

We get to see a lot of the Punisher throughout, a good dose of Dr. Bruce Banner in his non-Hulk form (so not living as a hybrid, which is interesting), and a glimpse of Michael Mando as Scorpion (with the weirdest lip-syncing). And is that the voice of Keith David explaining about a spider’s life-cycles? There’s also a hint that we could be dealing with a Daredevil antagonist, The Hand, and we know Matt Murdock’s in the movie.

It’s believed that Sadie Sink’s unknown character appears in a half-second moment showing a hooded figure from behind, although that’s still speculative. People still don’t know who she’s playing, with the top picks seeming to be Jean Gray or Shathra.

And of course, MJ has a new boyfriend, and thus we must all be distraught. You know what? I hope they’re good for each other and very happy. I think the real focus of this trailer should be that Peter’s growing spiderweb inside himself, which is completely disgusting and also rather brilliant. Oh, and a final thought: he’s in his classic outfit at every point in this trailer, which might be careful editing, or even replacement SFX, but also could suggest a complete detachment from whatever remains of the Avengers.

It’s somewhat extraordinary that it’s been five years since the last Tom Holland Spidey outing. Those MCU movies were coming so thick and fast that it’s bizarre to realize that the cinematic universe has almost ground to a halt. Quite how half a decade has gone by since Dr. Strange and Spider-Man nearly broke the multiverse is something I cannot explain, unless perhaps I was a victim of the Blip? But it’s nice to be looking forward to a new MCU outing for a change, rather than feeling exhausted by the premise.
