A new era of competitive Pokemon battling is coming with the release of Pokemon Champions next month, and it has already been confirmed to be compatible with the Nintendo Switch versions of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. When Pokemon Home compatibility is added for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, players will be able to transfer any mons they’ve caught during their adventure through the Kanto Region to Pokemon Champions. Given the competitive focus of Champions, there are six FireRed and LeafGreen critters that are worth keeping to eventually transfer to Champions.
Part of what makes Pokemon Champions so exciting is that it marks the return of Mega Evolution to traditional competitive battles. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen have several great creatures with Mega Evolution potential that haven’t been able to shine in Pokemon VGC since Gen 7. While it’s not exactly clear what the meta for Pokemon Champions will be now that new Mega Evolutions will be part of the equation, there are still six historically powerful Pokemon that will likely be worth transferring from FireRed and LeafGreen to Champions.
Every Feature Confirmed for Pokemon Champions So Far
Pokemon Champions is set to be the definitive battle simulator for the franchise, with tons of features for making competitive battles accessible.
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Players Will Want to Transfer These Mons for Competitive Battles in Champions
- Dragonite
- Porygon2
- Entei
- Kangaskhan
- Gengar
- Mewtwo
The obvious candidates for Pokemon that players will want to transfer from FireRed and LeafGreen up to Champions are ones that have competitively viable Mega Evolutions. Gengar, Kangaskhan, and Mewtwo are some of the best Gen 1 Mega Evolutions of the past, but the introduction of Mega Dragonite could see the critter easily join this group as well. While they aren’t Mega capable, Entei and Porygon2 are two mons available in FireRed and LeafGreen that have been contenders in the current Pokemon VGC meta and have the chance to thrive in Champions as well.

As a Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon, Dragonite already stands above most other mons with a Base Stat Total of 600. However, what makes Dragonite particularly strong is a combination of its two potential Abilities and access to powerful Physical STAB Dragon moves like Outrage. Dragonite’s Inner Focus Ability prevents it from flinching and having its Attack stat lowered by opponents with Intimidate, but Multiscale may be the better Ability overall since it halves damage from opponents while Dragonite is at full HP.

When Dragonite Mega-Evolves, it gains a 100-point increase to its Base Stat Total, along with a realigning of its stat spread. Dragonite was already somewhat of a mixed attacker before Mega Evolution, but Mega Dragonite shifts its primary attacking stat from Attack to Special Attack. This could make Dragonite less viable, depending on what Ability Mega Dragonite gets, but it also might increase Dragonite’s overall versatility in Pokemon Champions, too.

Porygon2 might not look too impressive at a glance, especially as a middle-stage evolution of Porygon. However, as a not-fully-evolved Pokemon, Porygon2 can hold the Eviolite item, which drastically increases its Defense and Special Defense to make Porygon2 an incredibly bulky team member. With its low Speed stat, Porygon2 is perfect for setting up Trick Room, which makes slower Pokemon move first while active. The combination of defensive bulk, a solid Special Attack, and the ability to go first while in Trick Room makes Porygon2 an underrated threat that could prove valuable in Pokemon Champions.
Porygon2 is somewhat difficult to obtain in FireRed and LeafGreen, requiring players to get a Porygon from the Game Corner and then trading it while holding the Upgrade item once they’ve obtained the National Dex.

Another Gen 2 mon obtainable in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s post-game is Entei, and it’s well worth catching for players who chose Bulbasaur as their starter. Entei is a fast and strong Physical Attacker with decent bulk as well. However, the best reason to transfer Entei to use in Pokemon Champions is for its Inner Focus Ability, allowing it to face Intimidate users without having its Attack stat lowered. This allows Entei to let loose with a powerful Sacred Fire attack that can easily deal with Steel-type Pokemon while resisting Fairy types that would threaten a partner like Dragonite.

Despite having a Base Stat Total of 490, Kangaskhan isn’t that impressive on its own. Normal types don’t offer much offensively, although the Scrappy Ability does allow Kangaskhan to hit Ghost-type Pokemon. However, Kangaskhan becomes a complete terror when it Mega Evolves, gaining access to one of Gen 6’s most broken combos.

Mega Kangaskhan’s Parental Bond Ability allows the mon to use almost any damaging move twice, with the second hit doing 25% of the attack’s base damage. While this is a drop-off from the Ability’s glory days in Gen 6, it can still be used with a move like Power-Up Punch, which has the side effect of boosting Mega Kangaskhan’s Attack by 1 stage. Using the move twice with Parental Bond gives Mega Kangaskhan double the Attack boost to quickly make this critter incredibly overpowered.

Gengar is a solid competitive Pokemon on its own, with high Special Attack and Speed stats. While Gengar loses Levitate as its ability when transferred from Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokemon Champions, Cursed Body can still help limit an opponent’s options with a 30% chance to disable a Physical move that hits it. What really makes Gengar worth using in Pokemon Champions is its Mega Evolution, which is arguably one of the most consistently powerful Megas in the series.

Once Gengar Mega-Evolves, it gets a significant boost to both its Special Attack and Speed stats, making them even more impressive than they already were. Gengar also has access to Nasty Plot, which can be used to increase its Special Attack even further. Combine these factors with Mega Gengar’s Shadow Tag Ability, which prevents opposing Pokemon from switching out, and it can trap opponents into a Special Attack sweep with moves like Shadow Ball and Sludge Wave.

The iconic Legendary of the Kanto Region, Mewtwo, is a shoo-in for a creature Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players will want to transfer to Pokemon Champions. This Psychic-type Legendary is another speedy Special Attacker with solid type coverage through its move pool. Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y essentially allow players to choose whether they’d rather have a more Physically-oriented Mewtwo or a more Specially-oriented one. Both options are solid, increasing their associated offensive stat by a substantial margin, and keeping their high Speed stat as well. However, Mega Mewtwo Y is typically the preferable option, since Mewtwo has access to better Special moves like Psystrike and Aura Sphere, while getting just enough of a Speed increase to make it faster than Mega Mewtwo X.
