Capcom Addresses Street Fighter 6 Alex Controversy

Capcom Addresses Street Fighter 6 Alex Controversy

Capcom is currently facing a massive wave of player backlash over the addition of Alex to Street Fighter 6. While fans were originally excited to see a classic fighter return to the roster, the debut of his DLC in Street Fighter 6 has been marred by a creative choice that left many people feeling uncomfortable. The developer has finally stepped forward to address the situation directly after days of silence. The team is now trying to figure out how to smooth things over with a community that feels a beloved hero has been fundamentally changed in a way that just doesn’t sit right with the series’ history.

Alex first showed up in Street Fighter 3: New Generation back in 1997, where he was introduced as an orphan being looked after by a man named Tom. In those early stories, Tom wasn’t just some random guy; he was a mentor, a manager, and a father figure who raised Alex alongside his own young daughter, Patricia. For decades, the fighting game community viewed this trio as a tight-knit family unit, with Alex and Patricia sharing a bond that most players interpreted as purely sibling-like. Patricia was always seen as the younger sister figure, and Tom was the man who gave an orphan a home and a purpose in the ring. This dynamic was a core part of Alex’s identity for nearly 30 years, making him one of the more grounded and relatable protagonists in the franchise’s lengthy history.

A Family Connection That Took Fans by Surprise

However, the most recent update that added Alex to Street Fighter 6 completely flipped that family dynamic on its head in a way that caught fans off guard. When players finished the new arcade mode, they discovered that Alex and Patricia aren’t just friends anymore—they are actually married and expecting a child together. The outcry from the community was so loud that the game’s director, Takayuki Nakayama, had to jump on social media to try to put out the fire. The director apologized for the “confusion” caused by the new story elements and admitted that the team is planning to make some changes. “While we have not changed the characters’ backstories, after internal review by the development team, we plan to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future,” Nakayama wrote. “Additionally, we have published a supplementary episode on ‘Buckler’s Boot Camp’ to provide further insight into the characters’ emotions and backstories.” This middle-ground approach hasn’t exactly calmed people down, as many feel that simply tweaking a few lines of text isn’t going to fix what they see as a total assassination of Alex’s character. Fans are still asking how such a controversial plot point even made it past the writing stage without anyone raising a red flag.

To help explain how this relationship happened, the writing team released a special short story for Street Fighter 6 titled “A Toast between Fathers” on the official website. This story takes place in a bar right after the wedding and tries to fill in the gaps of how the pair went from being like siblings to being a married couple. The story claims that they actually drifted apart for a while, and Alex only re-entered Patricia’s life to save her after she got mixed up with a dangerous crowd. The ending features a pregnant Patricia welcoming Alex home and calling him “hon,” while mentioning that their future daughter will be big and strong like her father. If that wasn’t enough to raise some eyebrows, Street Fighter 6’s World Tour mode added a dialogue line stating that Tom is actually a cousin to Alex’s mother, which technically makes the married couple second cousins. Alex even mentions in the English version of the game that Tom is his “adoptive dad,” which only makes the romantic turn feel even more like incest to the fans who grew up watching them as siblings. The Japanese version of the game reportedly tries even harder to distance itself from the blood relation, calling Alex the “son of a best friend” rather than a cousin. Even with this extra context, fans are still pointing out that the game includes art of Alex holding Patricia as a tiny baby, which makes the romantic ending feel unavoidable and strange, no matter how much extra text they add.

The situation has become so infamous that even prominent artists in the community have started speaking out against the move. The situation is a very rare moment in fighting game history, as developers almost never go back and patch the actual story content of a game after it has already launched. There have been plenty of retcons in Street Fighter sequels, but a story patch for a live game is practically unheard of. As players wait for the update to drop, the community remains divided and mostly unhappy with the current state of things. There is no telling whether Capcom’s promised text revisions will be enough to save Alex’s reputation or if this controversial wedding will forever be a dark cloud over the otherwise successful launch of the fighter in Street Fighter 6.
