Roblox is rolling out new account types designed for children amid ongoing criticism that Roblox Corp. is not doing enough to protect children.
Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki announced that Roblox accounts will soon have three categories: Roblox Kids (ages 5-8), Roblox Select (ages 9-15), and Roblox (ages 16+). These new account types will be released in June and aim to be aligned better with content and communications settings appropriate for people in those age groups. Additionally, Roblox Corp. is launching a “selection process” system for games available to players under 16.
As part of the June update, Roblox will also add age-checks to Roblox by way of the previously announced facial-recognition software or by a verified parent. Baszucki said its own analysis found that age-checked Roblox players under 16 will still have access to the “majority” of games they were already playing, and people aged 16 or older will see no changes at all.
Roblox Kids accounts will have all forms of communication disabled by default and access is limited to games marked with a Minimal or Mild content maturity label.
Roblox Select accounts, meanwhile, will retain the default communications settings and will provide access to games up to and including Moderate ratings. The default communications settings includes in-game chat being made available “gradually” and with safeguards, the developer said.
Regarding the ratings mentioned above, Roblox Corp. said it will begin the process of transitioning to the International Age Rating Coalition framework later this year. As for Roblox’s own content maturity labels, these include Minimal, Mild, Moderate, and Restricted–full descriptions can be seen below.
- Minimal: May contain occasional mild violence, light unrealistic blood, and/or occasional mild fear.
- Mild: May contain repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, mild crude humor, and/or repeated mild fear.
- Moderate: May contain moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humor, unplayable gambling content, and/or moderate fear.
- Restricted: May contain strong violence, heavy realistic blood, moderate crude humor, romantic themes, unplayable gambling content, the presence of alcohol, strong language, social hangouts and private spaces, extended AI interactions, and/or moderate fear. These experiences are only available to 18+ users who verified their ages.
Additionally, Roblox said it is improving the game’s existing parental controls in multiple ways, including giving parents the ability to block specific games. Parents will also have more tools to manage chat settings and will be able to approve access to specific games, even if they are not otherwise available in their child’s default account type.
“This structure is designed to give parents more precise control over the games and friends their child interacts with. Together, these updates are part of our ongoing work to build age-appropriate experiences for all users, apply safety-by-default protections for younger users, and give parents more visibility and control over how their children use Roblox,” Baszucki said.
It remains to be seen if the new measures will effectively address concerns, while also introducing new ones concerning the use of age-verification tools.
Roblox stock price jumps
Roblox Corp.’s stock price jumped up by 3.5% early in the trading session today, following the announcement of these new safety features. The company’s share value had been crashing since the end of October 2025, falling from more than $100 per share then to about $57 today. Over the past year, however, Roblox Corp. stock is about flat, rising 1.7%.
The downward trend for Roblox Corp.’s stock was likely connected to the many serious negative headlines against the company regarding the lawsuits and other criticisms levied against the company specifically regarding protecting children. Los Angeles county was one of most recent high-profile municipalities to sue the developers of Roblox, claiming the studio created an “unsafe online environment” for children.
Roblox has faced heavy criticism since a 2024 Bloomberg investigation revealed the platform has a rampant pedophile problem. Since then, several states–Florida to Kentucky to Louisiana to Texas–have levied lawsuits against Roblox Corp. over child safety concerns.
Baszucki himself previously tried to combat these criticisms in November 2025, but the conversation he had with The New York Times really didn’t go over well.
