Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2026. Heck, it’s likely to be one of the biggest video game launches in history. So there’s a lot of demand out there for more information about the game. This has led to a lot of bullshit rumors and fake leaks being posted online for a few years now. But it turns out some of those leaks actually ended up being real.

Over on the Gaming Leaks And Rumors subreddit, you can find a post from January of this year that rounds up a handful of details from a few different sources, some as far back as 2023. And surprisingly, after learning a lot more about GTA 6 via last week’s extended trailer and previews from various creators and reporters, we can see that a bunch of the details in this January post turned out to be accurate.

Now, I’ll warn you that there’s a single potential early story leak included in this list, so if you want to avoid that, don’t click this link to the January list on Reddit. Anyway, what did these leakers get right in the past?

Well, perhaps the most interesting is a leak from Twitter user GameRoll in June 2025, sharing details they claim they got from someone who isn’t a direct source, but instead is a “friend of a Rockstar developer.” This person allegedly shared the last names of Jason and Lucia with GameRoll before they were made public, seemingly proving they had a real source on the inside. And now, in September 2026, after leaks and official Rockstar trailers and interviews have revealed a ton of info about GTA 6 to fans, it seems like they did indeed have a source with inside knowledge, because a lot of the details shared by GameRoll over a year ago turned out to be accurate, including:

  • The return of the 6-star wanted level
  • The ability to greet and antagonize NPCs like in Red Dead
  • The GPS being rectangular and featuring pink waypoints
  • Jason’s ability to slow down time
  • NPCs react to players carrying guns
  • Gore/dismemberment is a feature
  • Gaining and losing weight is back
  • You can only carry so many guns and need to use a trunk to store more
  • The game is split up into chapters like RDR2

Now, to be clear, some of the other leaks included in that Reddit roundup from January don’t seem to be accurate, including claims that the map will contain three large islands or that it will contain over 1,000 enterable locations. GTA 6 sounds like it will have a lot of interiors you can explore, but I’m not sure it will contain 1,000 or more. And some of the other leaks claiming that the game’s map will be an island or that GTA 6 will feature a basketball mini-game aren’t as exciting, as those are pretty easy things to guess if you know Rockstar’s history of open-world games.

Still, GameRoll’s leaks from last year are intriguing to me, as a lot of people weren’t convinced they were real. Heck, I was one of those people, as I read this list in 2025 and rolled my eyes at how much of it read like something put together by a fan dreaming up their ultimate Rockstar game, something mashing up RDR2 and GTA into a perfect-sounding combo of realism and excitement. And yet now, a year later, it does indeed seem like at least a few people claiming to have inside knowledge of GTA 6 actually did.

Does this all mean you should trust every random post you see on Twitter claiming to have info on GTA 6 or any other upcoming game? No. But it is interesting to look back at years of GTA 6 rumors and leaks and see which were accurate, which were completely off the mark, and which were probably just lucky guesses.
