A New Dissidia Final Fantasy Game is Releasing Later This Month

Square Enix is bringing back a popular spin-off series later in March, as Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy will soon be available on Android and iOS devices across the globe. Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy is Square Enix’s next entry in the Dissidia Final Fantasy side series, and features some different gameplay elements from its predecessors.

Originally released on the PSP in 2008, Dissidia Final Fantasy was a 1v1 third-person fighting game that saw characters from across the Final Fantasy franchise, including Cloud, Sephiroth, Squall, Tidus, and Kefka, face off in duels that showcased their iconic abilities. An enhanced revision titled Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy was later launched in 2011. Dissidia 012 included more playable characters, including Final Fantasy 13‘s main protagonist, Lightning, and Final Fantasy 7‘s Tifa Lockhart. The series then received a reboot, called Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, which was first launched in Japanese arcades and later ported to PS4 and PC. Despite being exclusive to the PSP, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy is a spin-off worth playing years later thanks to its gameplay and unique story interactions.

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy Is Coming to Mobile Devices Soon

Two years after Square Enix shut down Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, a mobile-exclusive entry, the company will soon launch another entry in the Dissidia series. Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy will arrive on iOS and Android sometime in March, though the exact release date is currently not known. Pre-registration is now available via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy is a free-to-play game that features 3v3 boss battles against monsters from the Final Fantasy franchise, such as the mighty Behemoth. Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy takes place in modern-day Tokyo, as some characters from the Final Fantasy franchise face off against monsters and vanish like ghosts when spotted by other people.

The heroes of the Final Fantasy series dress up in modern clothing to blend in with the people of Tokyo. However, they can change into their iconic outfits from their respective Final Fantasy games during a battle before vanishing from the public eye without a trace. At launch, 10 Final Fantasy protagonists will be available for players to play as. These include returning Dissidia characters, such as Cloud, Lightning, and Zidane, and some newcomers. Some of the new additions include Gaia from Final Fantasy 14, and Prompto Argentum from Final Fantasy 15. Each character is then assigned one of four battle roles, called Melee, Ranged, Agile, or Support. For example, Cloud and Gaia are Melee characters that use large weapons to crush opposing forces, while Prompto is a Ranged fighter that uses various firearms to aid his teammates.

Dissidia’s Future is Still Unwritten

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy will only have 10 characters at launch. However, Square Enix teased that other Final Fantasy characters, including Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy 16, will become available in free post-launch content updates. The new Dissidia Final Fantasy game will also have full Japanese voice acting and will incorporate gacha pulls that grant players new abilities and characters. When Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy goes live, players who pre-register for the game can claim some login bonus rewards, including in-game currency and music tracks. Further details about how Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy will incorporate real-money microtransactions will be revealed once the game is released.

Given that the Final Fantasy franchise has had mixed success on mobile platforms, the success of Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy will depend on how many players enjoy the content that it plans to offer. Given how diverse and competitive the gacha game market is, time will tell if Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy can find its footing early and how fast Square Enix will release content to keep players engaged.
