After making two successful and well-liked Kingdom Come role-playing games, Czech developer Warhorse is reportedly going to make a The Lord of the Rings game next. That’s unconfirmed for now, but the developers recently reacted to the rumor during a recent Reddit AMA.

Asked about the Lord of the Rings rumors, Warhorse said, “We cannot really disclose our future plans 🙂 But we are staying in RPG genre!” The developer added, “Like any good game studio, we’re working on a new game. We don’t want to stray far from what we know, so we’ll be sticking with RPGs for now.”

Pressed in another question to say if the new project is a The Lord of the Rings game, Warhorse said, “We are hard at work on … something. I cannot disclose details but I can tell it is a huge, immersive RPG.”

The rumor of the new The Lord of the Rings game stemmed from the Tolkien Polska podcast.

Warhorse is owned by Plaion, which itself is a subsidiary of Embracer Group, and that company owns the gaming rights to The Lord of the Rings. Beyond the possibility of a new The Lord of the Rings game from Warhorse, it’s also been reported that another Embracer-owned studio, Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, is making a new The Lord of the Rings game as well.

Embracer said in 2024 that it was prototyping multiple new ideas for The Lord of the Rings games. Before that, Embracer’s Lord of the Rings boss, Lee Guinchard, spoke about how he wants there to be a renaissance for Lord of the Rings games, so it wouldn’t be surprising if more than one new The Lord of the Rings game was in the works.

The franchise in general has remained popular, and multiple new The Lord of the Rings movies are in the works as well. The first of these is 2027’s The Hunt for Gollum, which brings back Andy Serkis as Gollum in a film that he will also direct.

The movie will also see Ian McKellen come back as Gandalf and Elijah Wood return as Frodo. Oscar-winner Kate Winslet will play Marigol, with Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan taking on the role of Strider/Aragorn. The White Lotus actor Leo Woodall will play Halvard and Lee Pace will play Thranduil, reprising his role from The Hobbit movies.

Actor, comedian, TV host, and The Lord of the Rings super-fan Stephen Colbert is also writing a The Lord of the Rings movie to come that is based on the “Fogs on the Barrow-downs” chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring. It will feature a character missing from Peter Jackson’s trilogy: Tom Bombadil.
