A Remake Of A Visual Novel For The PSP Has The Most Ridiculous Recommended PC Specs

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair came out on the PlayStation Portable in Japan in 2012. The second game in the cult-hit horror visual novel series then came to North America two years later via the PS Vita version. Over a decade later, it’s getting a “retelling” on modern platforms called Danganronpa 2×2 and the recommended specs for PC are absurd.

Originally set to arrive this fall, the remake was delayed until January 14, 2027. But developer and publisher Spike Chunsoft went ahead and released the PC specs now anyway. They’ve been making the rounds and causing mass confusion among fans. While the minimum specs only require 8GB of RAM, the recommended specs require an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 and 32GB of RAM.

“32GB of RAM for a visual novel, ffs, AT MINIMUM Nagito has to get off the screen and give me a kiss on the mouth for all this,” one player joked.

bruh… you can count the polygons on two hands, wtf are they smoking 😂

What’s especially confusing is that none of the footage we’ve seen so far of the remake suggests anything that would reasonably require that much RAM. The game is mostly cutout characters moving overtop of static backgrounds as dialogue flashes across the screen. Either Danganronpa 2×2 has an entire second game hiding somewhere inside or it might be the worst optimized visual novel ever shipped.

It’s extra funny that these specs have come out at a time when RAM prices continue to skyrocket. When Danganronpa 2×2 was first announced, you could get 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory for under $250. It will now cost you closer to $1,250. The good news is that there’s still time for Spike Chunsoft to slash the RAM requirements in half. That’s what TT Games did with Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight earlier this year. Originally listed as recommended 32GB, the spec was later cut in half prior to the game’s launch.

Of course, even if the same happens with Danganronpa 2×2, 16GB still sounds pretty beefy for a game where you aren’t exploring an open-world full of objects that can break into a bunch of little Lego pieces. The remake’s biggest mystery might turn out not be who dies but why it’s such a beefy resource hog on PC.
