A Valve Employee Left a Negative Review for Half-Life 2 on Steam

One of Valve’s most popular games, Half-Life 2, received a negative review from an employee of the company, claiming it to be a test of Steam’s negative review system. The first-person shooter, released in 2004, is easily one of the most beloved games from Valve’s library, seeing critical acclaim following its initial debut. Half-Life 2 captured a multitude of awards after its launch and was even given the honor of “Best Game of the Decade” at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards. The game also boasts a long-lasting legacy among fans of Valve and Steam.

Half-Life 2‘s legacy spans the better part of two decades, with sequels, official mod support, and much more. Half-Life 2 received a pair of episodic sequels in 2006’s Half-Life 2: Episode One and 2007’s Episode Two, with a prequel also releasing in 2020 with Half-Life: Alyx. Valve added Steam Workshop support to Half-Life 2 in 2024, two decades after its original launch, while some previous mods and games based on the Source engine, like Black Mesa and Garry’s Mod, have even received full releases. Now, fans have discovered a negative review for Half-Life 2 from a Valve employee.

Fans Discover Negative Half-Life 2 Review from Valve Employee

Fans of Half-Life 2 recently discovered a negative review posted years earlier for the shooter on Steam, left by a Valve employee. The review from Valve Senior Software Engineer Adil Sardar gave the game a Not Recommended rating, with his account boasting more than 100 hours played on Half-Life 2. Sardar claimed that the post was made as part of a test of Steam’s negative review system and urged fans to ignore the post. The review even elicited a humorous response from one of Valve Designer Alden Kroll, joking that Valve had since fixed the issue and teasing that they were also testing Steam’s review system.

The amusing interaction on Steam came with plenty of tongue-in-cheek comments from Valve fans on Reddit. Many jokingly suggested that Half-Life 2 was such a good game that Valve’s employees needed to ensure that the negative review system was working for the game. Others took the opportunity to joke about the request for others to ignore the review of Half-Life 2, with some commenting on the long gap between the initial review and Alden’s comment. Fans also remarked on Valve’s employees testing the review system on the live servers, rather than using a staging environment.

The overwhelming popularity of Half-Life 2 has seen Valve continue to support the game, decades after its release. The previously-mentioned addition of Steam Workshop support to Valve coincided with the game’s 20th anniversary in 2024, which also saw Valve integrate Episode One and Episode Two into the base game. Valve added a new commentary track for the original campaign of Half-Life 2 with the update, with three-and-a-half hours of commentary from members of the development team. Half-Life 2 even got a small update in July 2025, pushing some minor bug fixes and gameplay adjustments for the beloved game.

Half-Life 2‘s legacy endures as fans have begged Valve to release an official continuation to the franchise. Half-Life 3 has become a meme among the gaming community, with fan requests for an official third entry to the franchise spanning decades. Valve has often played along with the rumors, teasing fans with a potential Half-Life 3 reveal, though the company has yet to officially confirm a full follow-up to Half-Life 2. Valve also showed off some early-in-development footage for Half-Life 3 that was eventually scrapped as part of the anniversary celebration for Half-Life 2. The Half-Life series remains one of the most influential franchises in PC gaming, even without Half-Life 3.
