Lord of the Rings: War in the North, which first launched in 2011, has been confirmed to be reeiving a brand-new physical disc release on the PlayStation 5. These will include the game’s Legacy Edition, which is essentially a polished and enhanced version of the original. Before this physical PlayStation 5 re-release was announced, developer Aspyr shadow-dropped the Legacy Edition on digital storefronts.
War in the North has had a tumultuous journey over the past 15 years. At launch, some outlets called it a commercial failure after it sold very few copies worldwide. In 2018, the game was suddenly removed from some digital storefronts, with many speculating that licensing issues were behind the decision. Surprisingly, TLotR: War in the North returned in August 2026 with a new publisher and a digital re-release, and it went on to receive positive user reviews.
TLotR: War in the North Gets Standard and Deluxe Physical Editions
Developer Aspyr had already said that fans could expect more The Lord of the Rings games in 2026. Now, it has officially announced Standard and Deluxe Editions for War in the North, priced at $49.99 and $79.99 USD, respectively. Powered by Limited Run Games, the Standard Edition comes with a disc, or a cartridge for Switch 2 consoles, along with two extra items: a slipcover and the Wayfinder’s Ledger booklet. The more expensive Deluxe Edition includes everything in the Standard Edition, along with a steelbook case, cloth map, and a weathered letter with a foreword by Jed Brophy.

The Legacy Edition of War in the North has been optimized for modern consoles and runs at 60 FPS. Developer Aspyr has also fixed many bugs and glitches while improving its visual quality. It added a new feature that lets fans switch between the three playable characters during combat. The enhanced version also improves the user interface, adds autosaves and extra save slots, and brings gyro and motion sensor support to PS5 and Nintendo Switch.
Aspyr also recently brought two of the best The Lord of the Rings games to Nintendo Switch consoles. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition were released on the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 30. And now that Aspyr’s parent company, Embracer Group, has acquired Middle-earth Enterprises, it remains to be seen whether more classic Lord of the Rings games will return in a similar way.
The new TLotR: War in the North discs arrive at a time when physical media faces growing pressure in the video game industry. PlayStation has not backed down from its plans to stop producing new discs in the near future, and some believe other companies could follow suit. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but for now, fans of The Lord of the Rings can look forward to seeing one of its classic game adaptations return in physical form.
