After 16 Years, Forgotten Nintendo DS Game Officially Getting New Release on Steam

The Nintendo DS is home to a variety of fan-favorite games, the majority of which are from Nintendo itself. Games like Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Mario Kart DS, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass are typically listed among the handheld’s best. However, several third-party Nintendo DS games have quietly been forgotten in the years since the console’s heyday, but now one of the best is making a comeback on Steam.

Although the DS is not known for its horror games, the Dementium series is an outlier among the handheld’s more beloved titles. The two Dementium games may not be the most celebrated horror games, but they played an important role in the Nintendo DS’ history and the greater history of M-rated horror releases on Nintendo consoles. Now, over 15 years after it was originally released, the second Dementium game is getting a new Steam port.

Developer and publisher Atooi has recently launched a Steam page for the classic Nintendo DS horror sequel Dementium 2, slated for release sometime this month. Although a firm release date hasn’t been nailed down, horror fans can expect Dementium 2 to join the lineup of Steam horror games launching in time for the Halloween season. Last year, the first game in the series, Dementium: The Ward, received a Steam port, with its sequel set to follow suit a year later.

The original Dementium 2, restored by the team who made it. William Redmoor wakes with fresh staples in his skull inside an asylum for the criminally insane, where the walls peel back to reveal something worse. Fight, solve, and survive the cult DS horror classic, now on PC.

Dementium 2 follows protagonist William Redmoor, who awakens in Bright Dawn Treatment Center to accusations that he has murdered his wife. William finds himself surrounded by otherworldly horrors as he tries to escape the facility, all while being carefully observed by the man who calls himself the Doctor. Gameplay follows the classic survival horror formula pioneered by games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, where players will have to solve puzzles, manage their inventory, and fight off horrific creatures if they want to get out alive.

The original Dementium was released on the DS in 2007, with this sequel following up on the handheld in 2010. While Dementium 2 did receive an HD Steam release in 2013, development was done by a third-party studio without input from the original developers and was critically panned at release. This new port of Dementium 2 is being handled by the original team to make it as faithful to the Nintendo DS game as possible while offering modern features and graphical upgrades.

Features of this Steam port of Dementium 2 include:

  • Crisp or crunchy. Play in up to 4K, or drop to retro resolution for the pixelated look of the original hardware
  • Classic or modern flashlight. Explore with a realistic new beam, or switch to the original DS stencil light for the authentic look
  • Walk in blind. The original warned you with music whenever an enemy was near. Turn it off, and nothing will tip you off
  • Redesigned for a single screen. Everything the DS split across two displays now fits in one view, with an on-screen mini-map to guide you
  • Your choice of controls: full controller support or mouse and keyboard
  • Plays great on Steam Deck: Take the nightmare to bed with you
  • Steam Achievements to earn

With all the major horror game releases on Steam in October 2026, such as the recently released Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival and Silver Pines, Dementium 2 can’t afford to fly under the radar of nostalgic Nintendo DS fans. In the meantime, interested fans can check out Dementium: The Ward on Steam to prepare themselves for the sequel’s release later this month.
