One of the first simulation games on the Dreamcast, Sega Rally 2, has had its online multiplayer functionality dusted off in 2026. Originally released on the Dreamcast as a port of the Sega Model 3 game in 1999, Sega Rally 2 managed to appeal to a large audience despite some criticism surrounding its performance.
One overlooked detail about Sega Rally 2‘s initial release is that it was technically one of the first games on the Dreamcast to feature online multiplayer. Many players are unaware of this because Sega removed the online functionality from the global version, keeping it exclusive to Japan. Now, as its 27th anniversary approaches, Sega Rally 2, one of the best racing games Sega ever made, is back online. And the multiplayer is no longer region-locked.
Sega Rally 2’s Online Multiplayer Has Been Revived
As a nearly 30-year-old console, the Sega Dreamcast’s pioneering online games mostly live on thanks to the hard work of fans and modders. The same is true of Sega Rally 2, as its online multiplayer has been reactivated through DreamPi, a software solution for connecting Dreamcast consoles to the network. DreamPi now allows fans to play Sega Rally 2 with up to three friends in seamless online multiplayer, something many players outside Japan never had a chance to experience before. The only catch is that, in addition to the software, players will also need a Japanese copy of the game because it’s the only version with multiplayer codes.

Sega Rally 2 allows players to create private lobbies, chat with friends before matches, and compete on all the available courses. However, since players are limited to the Japanese edition, they might need to spend some time familiarizing themselves with the menus and icons, as they are not translated. That said, given Sega Rally 2‘s age, it’s safe to assume that it doesn’t have complicated features, and understanding the icons should be fairly easy for fans of classic Sega Dreamcast games.
Sega Rally 2 also has a split-screen mode, so those who may not want to go through the hassle of connecting the console to the internet can still enjoy the game with a friend. Additionally, the game has an offline league-like mode where players compete in championships and unlock rewards. That is to say, even as an offline game, Sega Rally 2 always had enough content to keep players engaged for hours. However, the newly revived online multiplayer can certainly amplify its replay value after all these years.

It is impressive to see that, after nearly three decades, the Sega Dreamcast still has an active community. Interestingly, there are even a couple of indie developers out there making new games for the Sega Dreamcast. One good example is Noah and the Poohloudies, a 3D platformer that is planned to launch on the platform sometime in the near future.
