Game Rant can exclusively share new gameplay footage from Citadelum. This strategy game with some serious Age of Mythology vibes is currently targeting a 2024 release for PC, with its console ports also being in the works.
Citadelum is an Ancient Rome-set city-builder that was originally announced in January 2024. Developed by Abylight Barcelona, the game will allow players to build up settlements, establish trade routes on a Civilization-like world map, and lead legions into war. It will also feature some fantastical elements in the form of deities, which are implemented in a way reminiscent of Age of Mythology, especially when combined with the game’s genre, setting, and art style.
New Citadelum Trailer Highlights Its Core Mechanics
Five months following its announcement, Game Rant can now share some new footage from Citadelum. The exclusive 80-second video goes over some of the game’s mechanics, like setting up resource gathering and refinement operations, as well as building out settlements. The clip also offers a fresh look at the game’s world map, which will be used for establishing commerce routes and deploying legions. Another one of the game’s mechanics featured in the trailer is its system of worship, which allows players to honor gods with pantheons and tributes, something that fans of Roman history are likely to appreciate.
True to the ancient mythology that inspired it, the gods in Citadelum aren’t all benevolent, but prone to very human behavior such as mood swings and ruthlessness. They also have rivalries, so honoring one may incur the wrath of another. Keeping these divine beings happy is one of the three defining pillars of the Citadelum gameplay loop, together with city-building and strategic expansion through commerce, warfare, or a combination thereof.
Citadelum Narrows Down 2024 Release Window
Publisher Abylight Studios originally announced Citadelum with a 2024 release window. Game Rant has learned that this launch time frame has now been narrowed down to Q3 2024, at least as far as the PC version of the game, which can already be wishlisted on Steam, is concerned. Console ports are also in the pipeline, with the plan being to launch them following the PC release, which will be Steam Deck-verified.
Citadelum hence appears poised to debut at quite a busy time for the strategy games market; plenty more city-builders are currently either close to release or awaiting significant updates after launching in early access. Many strategy fans are also currently keeping an eye out for Age of Mythology Retold, which is still waiting for a release date after being confirmed for a 2024 debut. Whether Citadelum manages to find an audience among this fierce competition remains to be seen.
