AI Actress Glitches Out Mid-Interview And Switches To Cantonese

On Friday, an amusing clip began to circulate of Piers Morgan’s interview with “Tilly Norwood,” an AI created “movie star” who has generated a lot more op eds than Hollywood blockbusters. Joined by Oppenheimer star Tom Conti, the experienced human actor asked the newcomer simulation if its co-stars were also computer generated. Struggling to understand the question, Norwood seemed to freeze up, before breaking into Cantonese for 20 seconds.

“I didn’t quite get that,” said Conti. “Did you get that Piers?”

EXCLUSIVE: AI actress Tilly Norwood glitches and starts speaking CHINESE during her interview with Piers Morgan and real-life actor Tom Conti…

Norwood has been the floor model for the AI firm Particle6, who have been advertising their artificial actress for a year. Despite the seemingly routine coverage of Norwood in the commercial press, some have asked the obvious: Doesn’t a movie star need to star in a movie? Particle6 have been putting Norwood on a press tour to advertise their first film, Misaligned, which follows an AI performer’s journey to become accepted by humans. Generated through AI, I would wager Norwood’s quest in the simulation goes a lot more fruitfully than the attempt in the real world.

AI in Hollywood entertainment continues to be its flagship campaign, with firms seeking to prove the prowess of the tech by promising to replace human creators with instantaneous material. Still jittery, impermanent and uncanny, it has yet to impress audiences beyond short form clips on Facebook. Industry groups continue to build protections for actors and crew from the desires of studios to cut human labor. Meanwhile, movie goers appear to lambast directors who were a little too quick to shine to the trend. Ultimately, any path to stardom will have to impress younger theater goers, who seem far more despondent to AI than older generations.

The interview with Morgan only seemed to entrench many of the reasons AI entertainment has struggled to displace the real deal. Cycling through dead eyed animation loops, Norwood’s stilted speaking pattern is as captivating as your car’s instructions to turn left in 20 yards. Particle6 CEO Eline van der Velden told Deadline that Norwood throwing some Chinese on ’em was just showing off. “I’m guessing she just wanted to show her language skills as most of her interviews to date have been in English,” explains van der Velden. “She is autonomous after all.”
