AI Driving Game Demo Already Putting Developers Into Debt

Teach My Little Sister How To Drive is an upcoming DMV simulator where players, riding passengers, instruct a chaotic young student to pass their exam. Developers Easy Fox are embracing AI for the project, the titular sister a live chat bot that the player is instructing. Beyond mere contention for the tech, Easy Fox are finding that the mere demo for the game is proving to be problematic, as accounting for the token usage is forcing them into debt.

“Over the past month, the number of demo players has grown more than twentyfold,” reads the Steam page’s latest update. “Thank you so much for giving our game far more attention than we ever expected. This growth has also increased our operating costs considerably.”

As the update explains, the game originally patched players through to a chat bot operating on Google’s Gemini. With no cost barrier between them and the curious, players of the demo were triggering limit-use errors, Google informing Easy Fox that there’s no easy way out. Switching to the competing OpenAI model, while hoping to finding a fix with Gemini, is proving to be the least of their problems.

Easy Fox says the surge of players has forced them to take out a bank loan to keep the demo operating. Maintaining the demo is apparently costing them more than $1,000 a day, which they admit they will have to factor into pricing the final product. While a number of game developers have flocked to AI to create in-game assets and code on the back-end, Teach My Little Sister is a more unique case. Leveraging an agent for sustained real-time gameplay, the game has found an expensive way to recreate what Lifeline and Hey You, Pikachu! accomplished over 20 years ago.

“We want to continue operating the demo and would love for more people to enjoy it,” writes Easy Fox. “However, we are a small team of four, and financial pressure may mean we have to close the demo earlier than expected before the full release. We have not made that decision at this time.” The update also addresses complaints that, even in a game based around calamity, the AI fueled sister is not following instructions as desired.

While a microcosm of it, the financial strain is an amusing illustration of one of AI’s biggest white elephant. That is, no one’s sure how to make money off of it. While proliferating in short video content, horrifying fast food posters and visual assets devs “meant to take out,” the firms themselves are running purely on investments, not generating profit. The amount of resources needed to keep these computers burning continually outweighs what the public is otherwise willing to spend to see SpongeBob murder Shrek. Over the last year, AI firms have been forced to adjust, adding new premiums to their service, the so-called “tokenpocalypse.” With the global economy now held hostage by the industry, the burdens of the tech continue to put people on edge. Easy Fox are being taught a swift lesson on something the global population is likely going to learn the hard way.
