Amazon’s God of War Planning to Recast More Major Characters for Season 2

Amazon’s God of War Planning to Recast More Major Characters for Season 2

According to a new report, Amazon’s live-action God of War adaptation plans to recast Atreus and Thrud with older performers beginning in Season 2. As one of PlayStation’s most recognizable franchises, God of War is in the midst of a live-action adaptation following the success of HBO’s The Last of Us.

Amazon Prime Video has already given God of War a two-season order, allowing its creative team to plan beyond the show’s initial batch of episodes. The adaptation will begin with the events of 2018’s God of War, with Kratos and Atreus traveling to scatter Faye’s ashes, after which Amazon has confirmed the series will closely follow the events of Ragnarok. However, Amazon’s God of War has encountered a few issues, particularly with an injury and the recasting of the series’ Kratos.

God of War TV Series Can’t Forget What Makes the Series Great

Plans for the God of War TV show currently center around adapting the Norse games, but they shouldn’t come at the expense of the series’ roots.

As first reported by MP1st, casting calls have appeared for two characters named “Teen Joshua” and “Teen Ruth,” which are believed to be production aliases for God of War‘s Artreus and Thrud. The posting describes Joshua as an empathetic and curious archer who grew up in an isolated woodland cabin before embarking on a dangerous journey with his father. The character eventually learns that he may have a greater destiny, but his trusting nature leaves him vulnerable to manipulation as he explores his identity. Fans may note that those details closely match Artreus’ background and his relationship with Odin in God of War Ragnarok.

Ruth is similarly described as confident, intelligent, sarcastic, and physically capable, with complicated relationships involving her parents and grandfather, a king. That description strongly resembles Thrud, the daughter of Thor and Sif, who also shares a close connection with Odin. Several years pass between the two Norse-era God of War titles, so casting older actors would allow the television series to depict any physical growth that would occur in both characters without waiting for its younger performers to age naturally between seasons.

The supposedly planned changes to Artreus and Thrud follow the more unexpected recasting of Kratos, although the circumstances are substantially different. Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as God of War‘s Spartan lead character, suffered a serious bicep injury while performing a stunt and required surgery. Production was subsequently paused, and the scenes filmed with Hurst will reportedly need to be reshot once Amazon selects a replacement. No new Kratos actor has been officially announced; however, a few rumors claim that Dave Batista is currently in talks to take up the role.

Replacing multiple central performers for Amazon’s God of War could make continuity more difficult, especially if audiences become attached to Season 1’s versions of Atreus and Thrud, which is always a challenge unique to television. However, a clearly established time jump could make the changes feel natural while helping Amazon distinguish its adaptations of God of War and God of War Ragnarok. The casting calls also provide one of the strongest indications yet that Amazon intends to cover both games relatively quickly rather than substantially extending the first adventure across multiple seasons. With the series still lacking a premiere date, the reported recastings could be subject to change, but they suggest that Amazon might be strapping in for the long haul when it comes to stories in the God of War universe.
