Ambitious Fallout: New Vegas Van Buren Mod Gets Exciting New Update

Ambitious Fallout: New Vegas Van Buren Mod Gets Exciting New Update

Fallout: Revelation Blues has received a new trailer and name. Moreover, its developers have confirmed some preliminary details about the Fallout mod’s next demo.

Revelation Blues is an ambitious project seeking to recreate Interplay’s original Fallout 3 game concept, Project Van Buren. Devised as a total overhaul of Fallout: New Vegas, it was first announced in late May 2021. The project has been receiving somewhat regular status updates via its Discord server ever since.

After Fallout 3 Remastered’s Shadow Drop Fiasco, Here Are the Next Best Release Date Possibilities

After Fallout 3 Remastered failed to shadow drop, anniversaries, show timing, and Bethesda patterns offer clues about when it could launch.

Fallout: Revelation Blues Renamed to Fallout: The New West

On February 4, the developer collective behind the ambitious overhaul mod released a new trailer that offers a brief glimpse of the project’s setting, while simultaneously establishing a name change: Fallout: Revelation Blues is now called Fallout: The New West. Elaborating on this decision, one of the developers took to the project’s Discord server to reveal the team felt the old name wasn’t “grabby” enough. At the same time, the new moniker seeks to better capture what the upcoming mod is all about, reflecting the fact that The New West will focus on exploring the American Southwest in the Fallout lore.

Fallout: The New West Is Getting a Second Demo Soon

Alongside the new trailer—edited in the style of classic Fallout games—the United West Team has announced that a new demo of its large-scale New Vegas mod is not just in development but also close to completion. The demo aims to recreate the opening sequence of Project Van Buren, in which players must escape from the Tibbets penitentiary in Arizona, controlled by an unhinged split-personality AI named Odysseus. According to a recent FAQ posted on the project’s Discord server, the developers had considered announcing the demo’s release date with the early February 2026 trailer but opted not to commit until the build is essentially complete. Once released, the team plans to shift focus to completing Act 1 of Fallout: The New West, which will be released as a standalone playable vertical slice of the full game.

While a significant portion of Project Van Buren has leaked online over the years, the original Fallout 3 game was never completed. As such, the team behind The New West is taking some creative liberties in order to turn the concept into a cohesive, fully playable experience. Lore-wise, the events of the first two series entries and the 2001 SRPG Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel are all considered canon for The New West. There might also be some overlap with New Vegas, but only because Obsidian elected to reuse many Van Buren concepts for its critically acclaimed RPG. In practice, the developers behind The New West are treating it as a separate timeline.

Much of Fallout’s original charm is an acquired taste, and one that we believe remains worth acquiring.

As a total conversion mod for New Vegas, The New West is naturally going to play similarly to Obsidian’s sole Fallout title. This marks a clear departure from the original Project Van Buren concept, which was also planned as a 3D game but featured an overhead perspective, more in line with the 2D entries in the franchise. The developers have stated their intention to implement various quality-of-life improvements while preserving the design philosophy of the classic Fallout titles. “Much of Fallout’s original charm is an acquired taste, and one that we believe remains worth acquiring,” the team notes on the official New West website.

Looking at the bigger picture, Fallout: The New West is still nowhere near completion. Answering one fan inquiry on Discord, developer FloofMother said the current internal estimate is at least “four or so years till full completion.” The team plans to continue providing development updates to the community and is preparing at least one additional playable demo, currently expected in the second half of 2028. This demo is understood to be separate from the Tibbets penitentiary segment, which is anticipated to launch later in 2026.
