Mass Effect: Andromeda actor Tom Taylorson has commented on the game’s disappointing reception over nine years later. Taylorson, who portrays Scott Ryder in Mass Effect: Andromeda, believes the game was “done dirty” by publisher EA, which gave it little chance of finding critical success.
Mass Effect: Andromeda was always up against the odds. The game was released five years after Mass Effect 3 concluded the iconic sci-fi trilogy, introducing players to a cast of brand-new characters who didn’t quite connect with audiences in the same way as those in the originals. While there was some praise for its combat mechanics, which felt much smoother than previous iterations in the series, the writing fell short in most gamers’ eyes. The game was extremely buggy at launch, too, which made it even harder for it to live up to previous Mass Effect titles. There are plenty of lessons the next Mass Effect game can take from Andromeda, both in what it gets right and what it doesn’t.
Mass Effect 5’s Story Directions Have Gamers Seriously Hyped
Gamers are excited about the possibilities for Mass Effect 5’s story, with diverse ideas ranging from high-stakes conflicts to personal narratives.
ME: Andromeda Scott Ryder Actor Says Game Was “Done Dirty” By EA
Mass Effect: Andromeda Scott Ryder actor Tom Taylorson recently spoke about the game’s reception with We Are Mass Effect, giving his take on why the game failed to land with many gamers. “It was done dirty by a publisher expecting too much from it, not being fully cooked, forced out the door too early, forced to use corporate’s shiny new engine when many of the team didn’t know how to work with it and it was NOT suited to the storytelling part of the game,” Taylorson explained. “On top of that, it was released to a VERY toxic atmosphere online and elsewhere in the gaming space. It quickly became punching bag of the week for online chuds for views and clicks. Their love of hate sealed the deal.”
Taylorson was also able to take a look at the other side of things, reflecting on those who did enjoy Mass Effect: Andromeda. “Over time though, I’ve seen a lot of love for the game and its characters, for what it did well, and appreciation from fans for whom it was their game of the moment. A game that helped them, a game that got them through a tough time. There is something to be said for a 7/10 that comes to you in a time of need.” Nowadays, there are still many who argue that Mass Effect: Andromeda deserves a second chance, and it’s good to see that Taylorson himself can still see the best things to come from it.

There are many games that don’t deserve the hate they got at launch, and there’s an argument that Mass Effect: Andromeda is among them. Its proximity to and the expectations set by the original Mass Effect trilogy could account for much of the disappointment surrounding the game, but now, especially on PC with mods, there is definitely an enjoyable RPG to be found.

Mass Effect: Andromeda remains the last new mainline game in the series. A fifth game was announced back in 2020, but very little has been seen of the game since. The director of the next Mass Effect recently revealed that progress is still being made on the project, which, considering the radio silence from BioWare, is better than no update at all. It’s unclear whether the game will be tied in any way to Mass Effect: Andromeda or whether BioWare will choose to wipe the slate clean.
