A social media account run by members of the hacker activist collective Anonymous mocked users who are trying to hunt down the Grand Theft Auto 6 leaker group called Cyberleek. The GTA 6 leaks came three months before the game’s scheduled November 19 release date on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The GTA 6 leaks in question were first revealed by Cyberleek on August 18. Chief among the initial leaks were a look at the full map of GTA 6, which included the state of Leonida, Vice City, and other locations in the surrounding area. The leaks came over a week before GTA 6‘s anticipated Netflix event on August 27. After claiming responsibility for the distribution of these GTA 6 leaks, Cyberleek stated that the leaks were done to protest against Rockstar Games’ digital pre-order practices. However, Cyberleek also asked users who wanted more information leaked about GTA 6 to buy cryptocurrency in exchange for it.
Anonymous Mocks Users Trying to Find GTA 6 Leakers
Although Cyberleek has continued to leak gameplay footage from GTA 6, other users have stepped in to try and stop Cyberleek on their own terms. However, the hacker activist group Anonymous stated that the ones trying to hunt down Cyberleek are no heroes. Via the Twitter account YourAnonOne, Anonymous said that anyone trying to stop Cyberleek had “zero shame” for doing free work for Rockstar Games when the developer “couldn’t care less about its consumers.” However, the Anonymous account in question did not name any individuals or organizations who were trying to hunt down Cyberleek.
The statement from Anonymous came one day after Take-Two Interactive suffered a hit on the stock market following the leaks. The leaks reportedly caused Take-Two to lose over $2 billion in market value, as stock prices per share on the Nasdaq dropped between August 18 and 20, with stock prices as low as $231 at one point. Although Take-Two has a market cap of over $43 billion as of this writing, the stock value hit still made a noticeable dent in the company’s bottom line.
However, the leaks have since forced GTA 6 publisher Take-Two Interactive to take matters into its own hands. On August 21, Take-Two issued a statement concerning the GTA 6 leaks that stated the company filed multiple subpoenas for information related to the leaks. Take-Two filed the subpoenas with the Southern District Court of New York on August 20 and asked Microsoft and Discord to hand over any records related to accounts that could be involved with the ongoing leaks. Given that the subpoena was recently filed, it remains to be seen what evidence will be uncovered as the legal process plays out.
While the GTA 6 leaks received attention across social media, not everyone has been on board with what Cyberleek has accomplished so far. The activist group Stop Killing Games condemned the GTA 6 leaks and stated that the leaks are counterintuitive to the group’s continued efforts towards game preservation. Stop Killing Games stated that the developers who worked on GTA 6 were being negatively impacted by the leaks, having their hard work and surprises ruined just so that some leakers could punish a billion-dollar company while also making money off the leaks themselves.
