Peak developers have responded to criticism claiming the game hasn’t received enough meaningful updates adding new content, with a player calling the devs “lazy.” The claim comes following news that Peak would receive at least one more update in 2026.
Peak experienced almost immediate success upon its launch in June 2025, moving five million copies in less than a month. With over ten million copies of Peak sold to date, the lack of a promise of long-term updates and content additions hasn’t sat well with all those players. However, if looking at the developers’ point of view, the reasoning for an end to updates makes a lot of sense.

A new Steam game combines Peak, RV There Yet, and Chained Together to bring a fun and wildly chaotic co-op experience to gamers.
Peak Developers Defend Against “Lazy” Claims
On Twitter, a user took issue with Peak, saying that they’re mad that the game has a “lazy dev cycle” when the team “could be doing so much more with it.” The team at Landfall didn’t take long to respond to the claim, pointing out that Landfall and Aggro Crab, the game’s dual developers, aren’t live service studios, and pointed to the numerous updates the game has received since its release. The developer noted that updates are a bonus, rather than a right, given the nature of the two development studios.

The same person then said that the game needs an update “that actually makes sense,” suggesting that customization of plays and easier modding would be a big plus. Landfall explained that “full customization is a big ask,” though the developer is open to suggestions from the community. However, with regard to modding Peak, they noted that they had been fully in touch with the modding community, and that when it was asked if the community wanted a mod workshop, they weren’t interested. The team also brought attention to the fact that the game will receive “at least one more” update.
To be fair, Peak has received a number of updates since its launch, which have added new biomes, items, enemies, and more. Developer Aggro Crab has already begun work on a new project called Crashout Crew, which is expected to release later in 2026, and has likely taken the majority of the team’s focus away from Peak. While the teams are likely pleased that Peak has been so well-received and sold so well, it was originally part of a game jam that was developed over the course of just four months. Chances are neither team expected the game to perform so well, and hadn’t planned on providing significant long-term updates accordingly.
This has also been an ongoing issue with the indie sphere of games, especially those that have taken off into viral popularity out of the blue. Lethal Company, for example, has been tremendously popular since its release, and while it has seen numerous updates, most of them have been minor, with the sole developer stepping away entirely for a time to work on a new game called Welcome to the Dark Place. Another major indie hit that’s had a similar problem is the ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia. While it’s had quite a few updates at this point, including some major reworks of maps, incorporation of new elements, and new ghosts, fans have criticized the game for pushing back promised updates, including the Phasmophobia Horror 2.0 rework and the game’s exit from early access, which was originally thought to happen in 2024, but still hasn’t come out.
It’s also worth noting that Peak was developed following Another Crab’s Treasure, which left the team at Aggro Crab in a state of burnout after years of work. Putting a similar level of grind into the development of Peak could have very well worsened matters for the developers. While some players may be disappointed that Peak won’t become a live service title with continuous updates into the foreseeable future, the last major update for the game, its inherent gameplay loop, and mods from fans may help to keep it interesting for a long time yet.
