Apex Legends Season 28 Makes Controversial Ranked Changes

Apex Legends Season 28 Makes Controversial Ranked Changes

Apex Legends introduced ranked changes in Season 28 that have left fans dissatisfied. This first-person hero shooter developed by Respawn Entertainment debuted in 2019, but its release came as quite a surprise due to the lack of any prior marketing or official announcement. However, this did not mean that it escaped the attention of the gaming community: by the end of its first week, Apex Legends had surpassed 25 million players, and its number doubled in its first month. The game continues to receive new content and modifications with each new season, and fans recently had the opportunity to enjoy the start of Season 28 titled “Breach.”

The release of each new season is usually accompanied by improvements to Apex Legends characters, changes to weapons, and the introduction of new purchasable cosmetic items. With the debut of Season 28, new features have been introduced to the game that significantly affect gameplay. These include changes made with regard to the ranked players, such as the removal of Drop Zones and the restoration of Jump Masters, as well as alterations to matchmaking procedure, so that it dynamically adjusts over time and integrates restriction tests for higher-ranked players. According to the developers, the implemented changes are intended to provide fans of the game with a fairer start to the ranked experience and more balanced gameplay for the entire player base.

Apex Legends Makes Controversial Change to Help Address Cheating Problem

To combat cheating issues in Apex Legends, Respawn Entertainment makes a controversial change that has left some fans disappointed.

Apex Legends Fans Unhappy With Season 28 Ranked Changes

Although the changes introduced with Season 28 have only just been implemented, Apex Legends is already facing backlash from fans playing ranked matches. The main complaints about the game in the community thread for this title on Reddit concern the return to the singular Dropship deploy, which, according to participants in the discussion, is a major downgrade. Gamers point out that due to the new rules, most of the lobby dies before the actual fight begins, and the remaining players have to search the entire map to find their opponents. Some of the players in this situation even admitted to dropping hot, as they believed it was the only way to participate in a fair fight.

This isn’t the first time Apex Legends players have faced issues playing ranked, but the latest changes introduced by Respawn Entertainment are prompting many of them to consider leaving the game. Long-time fans also weighed in on the discussion, saying that Drop Zones were the perfect solution to avoid both pointless battles and turning the game into a scavenger hunt. Developers’ assurances that they are putting full control back in players’ hands are met with skepticism from fans, for whom the implemented options mean repeat ranked with no originality.

The negative attitude observed among a significant portion of fans on Reddit sparked a discussion not only about the controversy caused by the latest changes, but also about the general problem of battle royale games losing players’ interest. This raises the question of modifying and expanding the familiar formula in new directions, which, on the one hand, may prove helpful in providing players with fresh experiences, but, on the other hand, may discourage enthusiasts of old and proven solutions. The key to all this seems to be testing the effectiveness of the planned solutions, which Respawn Entertainment was accused of failing to do in this case.

Apex Legends is Shutting Down on One Gaming Platform via Respawn Entertainment/EA

It will certainly be interesting to see what effect Season 28’s key updates will have on the long-term reception of Apex Legends. Based solely on statements and opinions online, it is impossible to predict at this point whether the introduced solutions will cause players to abandon ranked matches or even the entire game. However, in the past, Respawn Entertainment has been known to revert to earlier solutions in response to fan feedback, so it cannot be ruled out that the game may soon receive further updates addressing current issues.
