The creators of ARC Raiders are currently focusing on a gameplay style that emphasizes world discovery rather than just traditional combat mechanics. This change in direction for ARC Raiders has been a major point of discussion recently as the team looks to separate its project from other titles in the crowded extraction genre. The development staff at Embark Studios spent a long time trying to pin down exactly what kind of experience they wanted to deliver to players. While the game still features plenty of high-stakes action, the newest philosophy is all about letting people soak in the atmosphere and find their own path through the environment.
After officially launching on October 30, 2025, ARC Raiders quickly became a massive hit with over 12 million copies sold across various platforms. The studio, Embark, initially had a very different idea for the project, which originally focused more on a structured boss-fighting loop. However, the development process was somewhat messy because nobody could quite agree on the core loop. This led to a major internal pivot where the team decided to scrap its original plans in favor of an extraction-style reset. This shift wasn’t just about changing the genre, but about finding a way to make the game more approachable for a wider audience while still offering the high stakes that fans of the studio expect.
ARC Raiders Developer Embark Teases Future Plans for the Studio
Embark Studio’s CEO teases new games are in development thanks to the major financial successes that ARC Raiders has had since is launched last year.
A Major Pivot Toward Player Freedom and Adventure
The story of the game takes place on a future Earth that has been completely devastated by mechanical enemies. In this setting, players must survive against these machines while gathering what they need to stay alive. Production director Caio Braga mentioned during a recent talk at GDC that early in development, nobody could quite agree on what they were making. He shared that, “You’d ask someone who would say it was a battle royale versus ARC, or it’s a co-op Shadow of the Colossus game, or it’s a hero looter shooter… our ARC developers thought the game was a co-op Souls game.” Braga explained to PC Gamer that the studio eventually decided to change lanes, stating, “back then, we said we wanted to find an accessible extraction—at that time—shooter.” However, it soon realized the real potential was in the “adventure” side of things. He noted that, “We saw more potential in allowing players to explore rather than just shoot.” This led to the current design where player choice is the most important factor, as he added that “you can basically play the way you want,” whether that involves fighting or just wandering.

This new focus on freedom has resulted in some very strange and entertaining behavior within the player community. The developers have reportedly been surprised by how people are interacting with the world. Some players have taken it upon themselves to act as a “Defender of the Swamp,” protecting certain areas of the map for no reason other than their own enjoyment. The studio has even leaned into this sense of fun with unique challenges. A popular Reddit thread highlighted a recent event where players were actually tasked with getting struck by lightning. While it might seem like the developers are just trolling, many fans had a blast trying to complete the goal to earn extra blueprints and skins. It turns out that being in a party or in specific weather triples the points, making it a great way to climb the ranks. These kinds of social interactions are helping the game stand out as more of a social sim compared to more traditional rivals like Bungie’s Marathon.
While the gameplay is winning people over, the studio has also had to work hard to fix some early mistakes regarding the game’s presentation and technology. One of the biggest controversies involved the use of artificial intelligence for character voices, which many fans felt made the game feel hollow. The developers faced considerable pushback for using text-to-speech systems for in-game characters. Embark Studios CEO Patrick Söderlund eventually addressed these concerns, admitting that real actors are superior to AI and that they have been re-recording those lines with real human talent to ensure the world feels more authentic.
Looking ahead, the game continues to face both mechanical updates and technical hurdles. On March 17, Embark released Update 1.20.0, which brought some heavy balance changes. The popular Il Toro weapon was nerfed, with its damage, fire rate, and reload speeds all taking a hit to make it less dominant. However, the update was overshadowed by massive server outages that saw over 113,000 people struggling with connection errors. Despite these hiccups, Embark is staying proactive with its roadmap. It previously released Update 1.19.0 in January and has promised a major new map and more robot types for April 2026. Söderlund has also clarified that while AI is used as a “production tool” to support older ways of working, very little of the landscapes or character work is generated by machines. As the game grows, it seems the focus will remain on refining the player experience and ensuring that the adventure remains the star of the show.
