ARC Raiders’ New Player Surge Makes the Dead Game Label Look Ridiculous

ARC Raiders’ New Player Surge Makes the Dead Game Label Look Ridiculous

ARC Raiders is about to celebrate its first anniversary, and it has already been hit with plenty of “dead game” accusations. Around this time last year, ARC Raiders was the talk of the town. Its massive launch had many convinced that extraction shooters were the future of gaming. Fast-forward a year later, and that doesn’t exactly seem to be the case. Direct competitors like Marathon have launched since then, struggling to reach the same heights that ARC Raiders did. Even ARC Raiders has seen a significant drop in players, hence the “dead game” label. That’s far from the actual reality of the situation, though, and the Frozen Trail update proves that ARC Raiders is still doing quite well.

Embark Studios’ hit title may not have kickstarted a huge extraction shooter renaissance, but just because the player count has dropped doesn’t mean that the game shows any signs of slowing down. Players have been anticipating the ARC Raiders Frozen Trail update, and the game’s Steam player numbers since its launch have been a solid reminder that this particular extraction shooter remains in a healthy spot.

WARDOGS Is Already Facing the ARC Raiders Problem Every Breakout Live-Service FPS Eventually Meets

WARDOGS is off to a very impressive start, but its success draws a curious and somewhat concerning ARC Raiders parallel.

The Frozen Trail Update Pulled in the Biggest Player Count ARC Raiders Has Seen in Months

Frozen Trail went live on October 8 alongside a free weekend. The launch day numbers were solid, but SteamDB reveals that players hit a big peak on October 11 with a whopping 185,443 players. This is only on Steam, so it’s unclear just how many joined in on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Of course, the ARC Raiders update didn’t even come close to its launch numbers, but that definitely doesn’t mean failure.

Live-service games are in a strange position, because there is so much pressure to keep up with the staggering player numbers that are seen at launch. This is nearly impossible for the majority of these games to pull off, which causes the internet discourse to completely change over time. What was once a bona fide hit is now considered to be dead, creating a vicious cycle. This has even caused games to fail before they really get a chance to prove themselves. ARC Raiders player numbers are still showing statistics that many live-service titles would kill to have, though, so it’s bizarre that it has received the “dead game” label simply because it isn’t consistently hitting its all-time peak.

ARC Raiders Frozen Trail Update Feature Highlights

  • New snowy, mountainous region called Pendola Pass
  • New weather conditions
  • Added enemies: Bully, Skulker, and Hydra
  • Added weapons: Bantam and Stiletto
  • Added map conditions: Frigate and Redirection
  • Upgraded skill tree
  • New items like the Grappling Hook, Yank Grenade, Banjo, Harmonica, Tether Launcher, Mountaineer’s Detector, and Basic and Advanced Cameras
  • 22 added quests
  • Various quality of life upgrades

One of the biggest hits in this update has been the Grappling Hook, and the arrival of a new map area is bound to be huge for players who have been with the game since its debut. It’s one of the biggest updates that ARC Raiders has seen so far, and the content has clearly been enough to entice players to return and draw in newcomers. Games like ARC Raiders have high points and low points, and the growing expectation surrounding newer live-service titles can sometimes paint a false narrative about a game’s success.

ARC Raiders Probably Won’t Hit Its Peak Player in the Near Future, and That’s Okay

The numbers that ARC Raiders was able to pull on Steam during its first month were staggering. With so much chatter surrounding the game when it first launched, thousands upon thousands of gamers were eager to see what all the hype was about, and the $40 price tag helped make it more accessible. Raking in 481,966 players in the first month is a bar that any new live-service game would be thrilled to reach, but keeping up with that kind of player count is a completely different story.

Past criticism from players about the lack of ARC Raiders endgame content also highlights another ongoing problem with live-service games. Massive live-service leaders like Fortnite set expectations that there will be a constant influx of content, which can cause players to grow restless before a game even hits its first anniversary.

ARC Raiders Is Still Running at a Healthy Pace, Regardless of What the Internet Says

Even though ARC Raiders‘ player count has technically plummeted in comparison to its peak, it manages to maintain a solid and consistent number, and that’s the true key to longevity. For example, Bulkhead, the developer of the hit new game Wardogs, is well aware that what makes live-service games work isn’t necessarily massive player numbers, but consistency, with CEO Joe Brammer stating in the past, “Wardogs will continue to lose players for months, as the hype dies down. Doesn’t make it a bad game or even a problem.”

If Embark Studios wants to keep ARC Raiders successful as long as possible, then the key to doing so is keeping a steady update schedule that keeps players coming back for years. Player count dips don’t mean the end is near. If anything, it presents an opportunity for developers to get creative and work on fresh content that will be exciting enough to make players question why they fell off in the first place.
