One simple, long-lasting gaming trick that goes back to the days of arcade machines can come in clutch when facing the legendary ships in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Just like they were in the original, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced‘s legendary ships are the toughest battles in the game.

As such, it’s worth noting that this trick can make beating them easier, but it won’t make it easy. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced players should still fully upgrade the Jackdaw, complete their Naval Officer quests, and feel comfortable at the helm of the ship. AC Black Flag Resynced‘s naval combat has always been one of its best features, and like many other elements of the remake, it’s simply much better and no less challenging.

AC Black Flag Resynced’s Mortars Rely on an Old Trick vs. Legendary Ships

In standard naval warfare, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced‘s mortars are great ways to deal damage from afar, and they’re effective against everything from cutters (overkill) to Man O’Wars. The standard mortars—not to be confused with the spray-like mortars unlocked via naval officer Deadman Smith—are useful when used properly against these Legendary Ships, but some players may be missing with them more than they are hitting. By and large, the Legendary Ships are faster and more agile than even a standard schooner, it often feels like, so using a mortar to hit where the Legendary Ship will be—not where it is—goes a long way.

Who’s That Character?

Identify the silhouettes before time runs out.

Instead of lining up mortars on or right near the Legendary Ship, waiting for it to adjust its direction, moving a way out from it, and firing where it will be, not where it is, is a great way to make sure mortars hit more consistently. Of course, it takes some time to get the timing just right, but timing and pattern recognition are gaming skills going back to the age-old arcade machines, with even the Adam Sandler movie Pixels coming to mind. But nail the timing, fire where the enemies will be, and the legendary ships will eventually go down.

It’s worth mentioning that this is obviously more effective depending on the Legendary Ship. El Impoluto is considered one of the hardest, and it definitely comes into play here because it is also one of the most mobile. It’s great against the armor of La Dama Nega, but it’s also a great tactic against the twins—HMS Fearless and Royal Sovereign. If done right, this trick can be used to hit both ships at once when they cross each other, and players will be able to do it more often in all fights if they have a fully upgraded Jackdaw in AC Black Flag Resynced.

Some players are no doubt going to prefer the new mortars obtained from Deadman Smith’s quest in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, but it’s going to be a matter of preference. It’s indeed easier to hit with Deadman’s Cohort, but it also demands more attention and deals less damage per shot. That trade-off can help with these Legendary Ships, should they so prefer, but mastering the timing and hitting where they will be can make a bigger splash on the ship’s health.
