Assassin’s Creed Shadows Can Leverage Its Dual Protagonists To Create a Special Villain
If Ubisoft plays its cards right with Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ two protagonists, it can create one of the most complex villains the series has seen.
A day later, the company shared a much longer gameplay sequence from the upcoming action RPG as part of the Ubisoft Forward 2024 event. The 13-minute clip is evenly split between Yasuke and Naoe gameplay, with the included footage confirming a number of new features that are set to debut in the game. One of them is the so-called “zip cam,” which will zoom in on persons of interest in order to facilitate the process of finding targets while navigating the world. This camera flourish can be seen in action around the 3:45-minute mark in the video.
Posture System Aims to Add Depth to Assassin’s Creed Shadows Combat
Another showcased novelty is the posture system, which will aim to add depth to Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ combat. The mechanic allows players to strategically “hold posture” during confrontations in order to essentially charge up their attacks and deal devastating blows that can even extend into dynamic executions if the target’s health is low enough. But the trade-off with this technique is that the character is exposed while using it, so the only way to weaponize posture effectively will be to learn enemy movesets in order to figure out when it’s safe to start charging up attacks. Ubisoft confirmed that posture can be initiated at any point in combat, even during combos.
The posture system won’t be exclusively available to the player, with the newly shared gameplay footage confirming that select enemies will also be able to use it. One of them is Fujioka Jiro, a mini boss who Yasuke is seen fighting after the five-minute mark in the video.
Dynamic Seasons Will Affect How Assassin’s Creed Shadows Missions Play Out
The developer commentary that was shared along with the new gameplay footage has also elaborated on the changing open world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Ubisoft hence confirmed that the dynamically changing seasons won’t be just for show, but significantly affect how missions play out. The example that the company used to illustrate that feature concerned the Naoe mission showcased in the latter half of the video; in it, the assassin is seen infiltrating a castle at night, with her footsteps being muffled by the sound of spring rain. She ultimately approaches the target by diving through a pond, all the while utilizing a piece of bamboo as a snorkel. If the player were to tackle the same mission during winter, they would have to come up with a completely different approach because the pond would be frozen, a Ubisoft official explained.
