Baldur’s Gate 3 is an incredible game with a ton of content that ensures the players will never find themselves getting bored while playing it. In Act 2, the player will eventually run into an individual known as Yurgir.
Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Finesse Weapons
BG3 has many great finesse weapons. Here are the best.
The player can choose to help or kill him. This is how the player can get rid of him to continue the story.
Who is Yurgir?
Yurgir is a fiend that the player will be warned about by Raphael before even meeting him. He’s an Orthon from the Nine Hells who is stuck in a contract with Raphael. If he is to leave this place without completing his contract, he will have to become Raphael’s slave forever. With him, he has a band of Merregon Legionnaires as well as Nessa, a displacer beast.
Where To Find Yurgir
To find Yurgir, the player must first access the Gauntlet of Shar. Once there, the player should find the waypoint that is inside, located not far from where they’ll fight against some justifiers.
The player will pass the ancient altar and jump down some broken stairs. From there, the player should go left where they will find a door with Nessa the beast inside. The player should be careful while entering as it’s an ambush by Yurgir and his crew.
How To Defeat Yurgir
When it comes to Yurgir, there are multiple ways to take him down.
Fighting and Killing Him
The most straightforward option when it comes to Yurgir is to fight him. However, this is easier said than done. Indeed, Yurgir and his crew will attempt to ambush the player, however, if the player passes a perception check, they’ll be able to sense that something is off.
In that case, the best option for the player is to attack first by using an area of effect spell to not be taken by surprise by Yurgir. When the fight starts, the most annoying part will be Yurgir turning invisible and attacking the player. Spells like Faerie Fire might be of use and generally using area-of-effect spells will make it more likely for an attack to land on him.
The player will be attacked heavily from above as Yurgir and his team will fire arrows at the player, and in front of the player, there is also Nessa, which will hit the player with its tentacles.
Yurgir will also throw bombs at the player, and to make it backfire on him, the player should pick up these bombs and throw them back. With that, the player should be able to deal with him easily enough.
Causing Him To Kill His Allies and Then Himself
The most interesting way to deal with Yurgir, a band of Merregon Legionnaires, and Nessa, is just to smooth talk him into doing it himself.
To achieve that, the player must first ask Yurgir to share his experience with Raphael. Then the player should ask him to reveal to them his contract. He will start signing his contract.
Eventually, the player will get the option “The lyrics are a trick. You’ve always had an audience – your followers. Get rid of them.” If the player succeeds in this Persuasion check, Yurgir will order his band of Merregon Legionnaires to kill each other, which they will promptly do.
Then, the player will get the option “You’re not finished yet – the displaced can hear you, can’t she? Kill her.” If they succeed once again with the Persuasion check, Yurgir will then deal with Nessa.

Yurgir realizes that his contract is still not broken. At this moment, the player will get this option “Exactly, Kill yourself, complete the contract, and you’ll be reborn in Avernus. Free.” If the player passes this Persuasion check, this option will cause Yurgir to take his own life, letting the player kill him successfully without even having to lift a finger.
The player should have some Inspiration at hand in case they miss a Persuasion check.
Helping Him Break His Contract
While playing, the player might feel pity for Yurgir and decide to aid him in breaking off his contract with Raphael, which might come to the disapproval of some companions, such as Astarion. However, if the player is set on helping Yurgir, here’s how they can go over it.
Similarly to making Yurgir kill himself, the player should convince him to speak his contract out loud.
“Spill all the blood sworn to the night. Silence all prayers;
smother each rite Wander Shar’s halls; hungry to slay;
Leave no Justiciar alive to obey. Leave none to hear it, then be set free; This song is your oath, swear, swear it to me.”
From this, the player can conclude that not all the Dark Justiciers are killed. With that, the player needs to explore the area and locate them.
Specifically, the player should climb down to the floor below, which shouldn’t be far from the throne room. There, the player will be at the base of the Shar statue. The player should locate a book referred to as “One Becomes Many”. Eventually, a rat will appear and try to strike a deal with the player. Leave the rat alone and he will lead the player to a treasure, or kill the rats to free Yurgir.
If the player decides to fight the rat, they’ll be met with a horde of rats that they have to defeat. If the player manages to defeat the rats, Lyrthindor will appear and attack the player. He is the last Dark Justicier required to break Yurgir’s contract.
After defeating the last Dark Justicier, the player can return to Yurgir. Raphael will appear and make Yurgir sign a new contract as the player helping him was a breach of the contract. With that, the player helped Yurgir break his contract.
Is Helping Yurgir Worth It?
The simple answer is no. No matter what way players look at it, helping Yurgir is a waste of time, and helping him doesn’t even benefit him in the end as he has to sign a new contract. Not only that, but the player will miss out on a lot of loot. Even if the player wishes to avoid a fight, there are better ways to defeat Yurgir, as previously shown, by making him kill himself and his allies.
What Loot Will Yurgir Have On?
One of the best parts of defeating an enemy is, of course, looting their bodies and surroundings. When it comes to Yurgir, he does have some interesting loot, namely:
- The Hellfire Hand Crossbow. The best loot here. A very rare crossbow that dishes out 1d6+6 piercing damage which can possibly burn the enemy if the weapon is used while hiding or invisible. It is perfect for a character like Astarion.
- Infernal Metal
Besides Yurgir, there’s Nessa, who carries nothing at all. However, the player should grab the Umbral Gem from next to her as it will be essential to complete the Gauntlet of Shar.
When it comes to Yurgir’s Merregons, they all have the same loot, namely a Merregon Halbard. However, there’s a hoarding Merregon who has better loot, which is as follows:
