Baldur’s Gate 3: Should You Save Nere, Kill Him, Or Let Him Die?
The player has many options when it comes to true soul Nere in BG3.
One way to get an old friend back is to take a key from Chop, but the player might wonder if it is even worth killing Chop for it.
Who is Chop?
Chop is a bugbear character the player will meet in Act 2. He’s harmless if not attacked, but he is also mindless, and can only do one thing – chopping corpses.
He chops corpses to make them into Intellect Devourers, and seems extremely unhappy about his condition.
The player will notice that he keeps an Intellect Devourer around him, locked in a cage. That is Us, the brain that helped the player during the prologue of the game.
US will only appear if the player met it in the game’s prologue. If they didn’t or if it died, then Us will not be present.
Where To Find Chop?
To find Chop, the player must, of course, be in the game’s Act 2. Specifically, they must have fought with Ketheric Thorm on the roof on Moonrise. When Ketheric Thorm escapes, he will head down into a Mind Flayer Colony.
There, the player will be able to explore the Mind Flayer Colony and will find Chop in the Morgue, surrounded by Intellect Devourers.
Should You Kill Chop?
When it comes to killing Chop, there are two reasons why the player might want to do that.
Firstly, if the player speaks to Chop, it’s obvious he is suffering and does not want to live. It’s unknown why, but he is mindless and can only obey, despite not having a parasite specimen in his head (when killed, he doesn’t drop one).
However, what is clear is that he is unhappy. If the player tells him that they will send him to join all the creatures he’s butchered, his answer is “Yes. Yes. Please.” The player can end his suffering. When he dies, he will say “Free At Last.”
That said, you should keep in mind that, even though he wants to die, he will still attack if hurt.
The second reason you might want to kill Chop is to get the key to Us’s cage. Us is a character that might sound familiar if you found him during the game’s prologue on the ship. If not, Us will not be here. However, if you do care about Us, there are ways to get the key without killing Chop, and avoiding a fight.
How To Kill Chop
Killing Chop is quite easy. You should first trigger a fight with him, which can be done by intimidating him and failing, or you could just strike him, which will cause him to fight back, even though he has no interest in living.
However, you should keep in mind that he has Intellect Devourers around him who will come to his aid when attacked. All things considered, you should take down Chop first and then focus your energy on all the Intellect Devourers attacking you with him.
Once killed, he will utter his dying breath “Free at last.” The player can now just loot his corpse to get whatever they need off of it.
Persuading or Pickpocketing Chop Instead
If you don’t really care about freeing Chop from his misery, and don’t want to engage in a fight, you can instead persuade him to give you the key, or you can pickpocket him.
A character like Astarion is extremely talented when it comes to pickpocketing others, and will do quite well here. For Persuasion, it should be easy as well, especially using a character with high Charisma.
With that, the player should easily acquire the needed key and avoid a fight. They can now open the cage where Us is locked.
Freeing Us The Brain
Us is the main reason anyone would even get involved with Chop. While killing Chop for his own sake can be an interesting thing to do for the players, on its own, it’s not that rewarding. A good reason here is the possibility of acquiring an old friend who is currently caged and locked away next to Chop.
Meeting with Us Back On The Ship
For players who don’t remember, Us is an Intellect Devourer that the player might have met back in the game’s prologue, when they were on the Nautiloid Ship.
When exploring that ship, you might have come across a body with its skull removed. It can be found by taking the elevator to the second floor. The player will have a few options when it comes to the brain that can be seen in the opened skull.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Finesse Weapons
BG3 has many great finesse weapons. Here are the best.
The player can free him, or even mutilate it. If the player manages to get him out, they have the option to attack it, ask it to join, or just ask it to leave. If the player asks it to join them, it will be a temporary companion until the end of the prologue and will help you in the forthcoming fight.
The player should avoid mutilating US during the prologue as doing so will lobotomize it, which will be permanent. This will cause its intelligence to go from 12 to 8. If the player wants it as a companion later, it’s better not to reduce its intelligence as it will affect its overall fighting prowess.
After the prologue is done, you may assume that Us just died during the crash and will not be coming back. However, you’ll be proven wrong, as seen in the Morgue. In fact, he can turn into a forever companion if saved here.
Opening Us’s Cage
Before opening the cage, if you speak to Us, it will mention that you are a friend who saved it once, and could perhaps do it again. Us mentions that people aren’t kind to it here, due to it being different, which is probably due to it having some independent thoughts capable of disturbing the hive mind. Due to that, Us is to be killed, but the player can save him.
With the key in hand, all you have to do is open Us’s cage, which should be located to the right of where Chop is standing.
When Us gets out, it will be very thankful to the player. Us will tell the player that it will remain with them and whenever called for, will come to the player’s aid.
How To Use Us
When the player frees Us, they will receive “Summon Us.” With this, you can summon Us once per short rest. It has some interesting attacks, such as Devourer Intellect, and Synaptic Charge. In general, it will be stronger than when you met it back on the ship.
Loot Around Chop
Besides Us, here is some loot the player can acquire from around the Morgue.
When it comes to Chop, here’s what he’ll have on:
- Raw Steak
- 4 gold
- Toy Block
- Cleaver
The Intellect Devourers will each have just an Intellect Devourer Cerebellum.
However, around the Morgue, the player can find more loot, such as:
- Adjustable Steel Helm
- Fierce Golden Helm
- Gold gloss Heraldic Helm
- Regal Helm
- Triumphal Helm
- Gloves
- Leather Gloves
- Some boots
- Butchered Mind
Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available to play on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5.
