While no game is without its detractors, Baldur’s Gate 3 is probably the biggest “10/10 masterpiece” since the 2020s began, and there’s a devil on my shoulder, rallying the cry that no game is perfect, mandating I point out that Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 3 is often criticized by the playerbase. Doesn’t mean it’s not a masterpiece. Either way, that just goes to show how “agreeing” on anything isn’t something gamers are exactly known for.

And yet one of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s late-game quests is essentially hailed as the best of the game with few, if any, detractors. There’s something about the House of Hope for everyone to love, from the way it brings together seemingly disparate elements of the game and the thrill of the heist to the moral considerations and epic final boss battle. Essentially, Baldur’s Gate 3 basically screams at players not to perform the heist on the House of Hope, which, of course, means players are going to do it anyway.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s House of Hope is a Masterclass in Quest Design

Baldur’s Gate 3‘s House of Hope brings together so many elements: Raphael and The Emperor’s distrust hits a fever pitch, it’s an epic finale to a quest line that spans all three Acts, decisions like Yurgir see resolutions, new elements and characters like Hope are introduced, and the heist itself is just as fun in execution (from the ritual getting there to Raphael’s defeat) as it is in concept. What’s more, House of Hope forces players to see it to the end—no camping, no resets—forcing players into a rigid quest that ends with an epic boss battle with staggering music. That music is a constant point of praise, but the whole quest is too.

IT IS HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST EVENT, FIGHT, AND MUSIC IN THE ENTIRE GAME, AND I AM SO F**KING HYPED UP ABOUT EXPERIENCING AND SO F**KING SAD THAT I DON’T GET TO EXPERIENCE IT FOR THE FIRST TIME AGAIN.” Another user agreed with DotaShield, saying that House of Hope is one of the best parts of the entire game and described it as “mind-boggling” that it’s one of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s optional quests. Having gone through hell, literally, this insight from Redditor BernhardtLinHares hits harder in 2026 vs. 2023:

“The way Hope really simmers down her insanity the moment Raphael dies is really heartwarming.”

This isn’t to say, of course, that there’s no friction within the quest itself or in the larger Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 3 area, but that the friction only adds to the game and its atmosphere more than anything. For example, Baldur’s Gate 3 has an urgency problem; that’s true here, too. The core concept of a Mind Flayer parasite in TAV/Durge’s brain (as well as most of the BG3 companions) is undermined by all the possibly lollygagging at the behest of the player, and the urgency and “Alarm” of House of Hope plays into that false urgency, too. Nothing is actually being pressured, but it feels that way.

If nothing else, though, that elevates House of Hope because of The Iron Throne. Saving everyone in The Iron Throne, under a time limit, is one of the hardest quests in Baldur’s Gate 3, and that player-stress overrides the sense of urgency. By faking a sense of urgency in House of Hope, it immediately becomes more urgent to players who are immersed in the entire quest; realizing afterward that it’s fake is just a result of a deeply engaging experience. And all of this is to point out that Baldur’s Gate 3‘s “flaws” in this quest still make it better, creating one of the best sequences in the entire game and CRPG genre at large.
