Battlefield 6 is Going Free to Play For a Limited Time

Battlefield 6 is Going Free to Play For a Limited Time

Battlefield Studios has confirmed that Battlefield 6‘s multiplayer will receive a free trial between March 17 and 24, allowing gamers to try the game at no cost. The free period aligns with the second content drop of Battlefield 6 Season 2, and incoming players will have instant access to the new map coming in the update.

Battlefield 6‘s launch in October 2025 was enormous, a return to form for the series that had previously disappointed with Battlefield 2042. Initial player counts were huge, with over 747,000 concurrent Steam players at its peak. However, the game has struggled to retain players over the last few months, despite a fairly consistent stream of new content, leading to Battlefield 6 lagging behind other shooters like Delta Force on Steam. After its initial success, it’s somewhat surprising to see the player retention levels be so poor, especially given its solid reception overall.

Battlefield 6 Season 2’s New Gameplay Mechanics Are Too Fun To Underutilize

Battlefield 6 Season 2’s new gameplay mechanics make matches more exciting, and these limited-time modes may be too good to end up truly limited.

Battlefield 6 Multiplayer Will be Free-to-Play between March 17 and 24

Battlefield Studios has announced an event that should see Battlefield 6‘s player count soar once more. Between March 17 and 24, gamers can play Battlefield 6‘s multiplayer free of charge, with access to four maps: Contaminated, Eastwood, Mirak Valley, and the brand-new Hagental Base. Players can hop into the action across six game modes: Conquest, Escalation, Breakthrough, Squad Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Domination. It’s not the complete multiplayer experience, but it’s more than enough for someone to decide whether they enjoy the game to buy it permanently.

The second chapter of Battlefield 6 Season 2, Nightfall, also drops on March 17. Alongside the aforementioned Hagental Base map, there will be nightfall features in certain game modes, which free-to-play players will be able to try out until March 24. These nightfall mechanics should fundamentally change how some matches play. It will be interesting to see how these mechanics work in practice, and whether they’re well-received by players.

The clear hope here is that this Battlefield 6 free trial is enough to entice more players for the long haul. By dropping it alongside a new batch of content, Battlefield Studios is giving itself the best chance of success in this endeavor, especially if the update proves popular amongst existing players. The initial launch of Battlefield 6 Season 2 wasn’t the turning point for the game that the developer wanted it to be, but there’s no reason why it can’t regain some of that early momentum.

Developer Battlefield Studios was recently hit with layoffs, though the exact number of affected employees is unclear. In that context, it’s clear to see why the next few significant content drops will be very important for Battlefield 6. The live service environment is increasingly competitive, and it’s getting harder for games to thrive among the many options available to gamers. Even those in established series like Battlefield and Call of Duty have struggled for sustained success in the most recent release cycle, an indictment of how competitive it is right now.
