Battlefield Studios Hit with Layoffs

Battlefield Studios Hit with Layoffs

Battlefield 6 publisher EA has reportedly laid off a number of individuals from Battlefield Studios, which is composed of Criterion, DICE, Ripple Effect, and Motive, today as part of a “realignment.” Neither the Battlefield 6 publisher nor any of the affected studios has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but it has been claimed that although a variety of different teams and offices have been impacted by the layoffs, none of the development studios will be shuttered.

These layoffs will come as a massive surprise not only to the developers who have worked on the Battlefield series, but to fans too. Although the franchise has had some rocky releases over the years, namely the disastrous launch of Battlefield 2042 in 2021, which became one of the worst-reviewed games on Steam, last year’s Battlefield 6 was the best-selling game of 2025. This was hugely impressive for a number of reasons, but mainly because EA had finally dethroned Activision and outsold Call of Duty, which often tops the sales charts year after year. Unfortunately, the latest entry in the series appears to have been on a bit of a decline ever since, with EA now reportedly laying off a number of staff members across the game’s studios.

Battlefield 6 Reveals Patch Notes for March 3 Update

Battlefield 6 update 1.2.1.5 is set to introduce spawn logic tweaks, Portal editor improvements, and quite a few bug fixes, among other novelties.

EA Lays Off Numerous Battlefield Developers

According to a new report from IGN, EA has laid off a number of individuals across Battlefield Studios, which is composed of Criterion, DICE, Ripple Effect, and Motive. The exact number of developers who have been made redundant remains unknown, but the report claims that these lay-offs are taking place as part of a “realignment” across Battlefield Studios. This news is, of course, devastating for those who are now unemployed, but all of the studios involved in developing Battlefield 6 will reportedly still remain operational, despite a “variety of teams” having been affected. As neither EA nor any of the studios impacted by today’s lay-offs have released an official statement, specific details remain scarce.

Although it may have had a record-breaking launch for the series late last year, Battlefield 6‘s player count has declined massively on Steam in recent months. The shooter managed to peak at more than 747,000 concurrent players on the platform in October, but has since lost a whopping 89% of its playerbase, averaging around 65,000 concurrent players at peak hours each day. The reason for users abandoning Battlefield 6 will vary, but it could be attributed to the monumental release of ARC Raiders, which has taken the gaming world by storm, or by some incredibly solid post-launch support from Battlefield 6‘s biggest competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 may have had a rocky start to its life cycle, developer Treyarch Studios has been knocking it out of the park with the game’s seasonal content updates. Tons of maps, modes, weapons, and more have left Battlefield fans wondering why Battlefield Studios is unable to release the same amount of content. The shooter recently received even more backlash from players, as the official Battlefield 6 Season 2 roadmap was criticized for the lack of content. To make matters worse, Season 2 was delayed by an entire month, which fans believed would allow the studio to make its second major content update much more impactful.

Clearly, Battlefield Studios was aware of Battlefield 6‘s declining player count, as developers were apparently “biting their nails” in hopes that the game’s Season 2 update would see an influx of players return to the title. Unfortunately, despite the team’s best efforts, that doesn’t appear to have been the case. Season 2 appears to have briefly spiked the number of players jumping in, as Battlefield 6 peaked at just over 92,000 concurrent users on Steam when the update was released last month. Since then, figures have once again returned to the average of around 65,000 concurrent players each day.
