Beast Of Reincarnation Release Date And Everything We Know About Game Freak's Ambitious RPG

Beast of Reincarnation is shaping up to deliver one of the most intriguing premises in games in 2026. As the Beast of Reincarnation release date steadily draws near, it’s important to learn everything there is to know about Game Freak’s upcoming action RPG.

The main developer of Pokemon is mixing real-time with turn-based combat, in a similar fashion to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This isn’t the first time that Game Freak has worked on other IPs, of course. But it definitely feels like a more ambitious leap than previous projects, aiming for cinematic flair and big-budget presentation to tell the story of a woman warrior and her companion dog on a mission to rescue their land.

It’s been some time since the first Beast of Reincarnation announcement, and Game Freak has shared updates and insights about the development since. From the latest Beast of Reincarnation news to information on its story, gameplay, and more, here’s everything you need to know about the promising RPG. In the meantime, don’t forget to visit our list with the best games of 2026 so far.

When Will Beast of Reincarnation be Released?

Beast of Reincarnation will be released on August 4, 2026. The launch date for Game Freak’s upcoming action RPG was confirmed with a release date announcement trailer on February 12.

Pre-Order Beast of Reincarnation

As of April 20, the Beast of Reincarnation pre-order is available at retailers like Best Buy. If you’re wondering how much Beast of Reincarnation is, the answer is $60.

There’s also a deluxe edition that costs $70 and includes the following bonus items:

  • Black and Brown Shiba skins for Koo
  • Oni’s Hat for Emma
  • Big Dipper sword for Emma
  • 100,000 Amber (in-game currency)
  • A number of vegetable seedlings

Beast of Reincarnation Trailers

Game Freak has shared multiple Beast of Reincarnation trailers. The most notable one, however, was presented during this year’s Xbox Developer Direct, which features a comprehensive explanation of its gameplay mechanics, a broad overview of the story that also provides insight on the Beast of Reincarnation characters, and plenty of gorgeous set pieces to marvel at.

In terms of reception, the gameplay overview has accrued 48,000 views, while the reveal trailer, released nine months ago, has 2 million views. This was shown during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, featuring a presentation of the world with a largely cinematic trailer that also included gameplay snippets around combat and exploration.

Then, in February, Game Freak shared a “Release Date Announce” trailer, which is quite robust. The video provides more details about the story, locales, and even some characters. Of course, there are plenty of combat segments, sharing an early look at the abilities that will be at your disposal, as well as the enemies you’ll face.

The most recent trailer was released on April 20, which is centered around pre-order bonuses. Moreover, it also provides an extended look at combat sequences and the story, as well as never-before-seen cutscenes. During the trailer, Emma is also making use of the pre-order bonus items, so you can see them on full display.

Those are all the trailers to date, but given the cadence, it’s safe to assume that we can expect a few more before the game launches later this year.

Beast of Reincarnation Platforms

Beast of Reincarnation will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be part of the Xbox Game Pass catalog on day one.

If you’re wondering if there’s a Beast of Reincarnation Switch port on the way, well, it’s tricky to say. When GameSpot asked Kota Furushima, who is the game director on the project, he said that “there’s nothing to talk about at this time regarding the platform, other than what has already been announced.”

Beast of Reincarnation Story, Setting, and Characters

Beast of Reincarnation introduces Emma, an exiled protagonist, and her warm, fuzzy companion, named Koo. Warmth, trust, and loneliness are the main driving feelings that the game wants to evoke, according to director Kota Furushima. The characters were born from that process.

Even though trailers indicate that the first encounter between the main characters is quite confrontational, the relationship between the protagonist and her dog grows as the story develops. The focus, taking inspiration and drawing from the existing knowledge of the studio working on an assortment of creatures, is to translate that into a protagonist and her companion traversing through a harsh and hostile setting.

Beast of Reincarnation takes place in post-apocalyptic Japan in the year 4026. Most of the human population was lost to the blight–parasitic plants that have overgrown across the globe, permeating through the ruins of human civilizations. The development team sees Japan as a perfect setting for a world suffocated in nature, blending mountain-surrounded landscape with elements of science fiction.

Emma has a special ability to hunt malefacts, which are creatures afflicted by the strange condition, and seal the blight inside their bodies. This, sadly, means that she is feared and lives isolated from the colonies where people dwell.

Thankfully, she meets Koo in the eastern region of Japan. The studio is being quite coy about what Koo’s purpose is, and it’s poised as one of the big mysteries of the story. As a pair, they’re tasked with eliminating the Beast of Reincarnation that is threatening the capital.

There’s a focus on plants as a primary motif, incorporating plants into the landscape, but also as part of the gameplay, with boss fights using vegetation and blooming flowers while fighting Emma and Koo. Malefacts are a good representation of this idea, posing an intersection, as these creatures are a fusion between plants and animals.

There’s also the so-called Golems, which are androids. Humans transferred their souls into these mechanical bodies to survive the world’s conditions. In the past 2000 years, they’ve grown quite savvy in terms of combat knowledge, but their souls have deteriorated, driving them mad.

Other characters are aiding Emma and Koo throughout the story. The pair is supported by Brad and Kagura, as well as a swordsperson called Kunai, who is accompanied by a malefact. If you’re wondering about the backstories and intentions of these Beast of Reincarnation characters, it seems you’ll have to wait until the game launches to find out, as Game Freak has been quite tight-lipped so far.

Beast of Reincarnation Gameplay

The Beast of Reincarnation gameplay is centered around the premise of being a “one-person-one-dog RPG,” as Game Freak calls it. As is immediately apparent from trailers and screenshots alone, this action RPG is a visceral experience in a similar vein to the ever-growing wave of soulslike games.

The main objective is to defeat powerful entities corrupted by the blight, known as Nushi, and absorb their power to grow stronger. In terms of exploration, you can expect harsh environments that require dynamic movements to navigate. This includes vine-like hair that Emma can manipulate at will, creating pole-like vines to double jump, and vine paths to get across platforms and run faster on them.

But her abilities don’t stop there. There’s a particular synergy between Emma and Koo that comes into play during combat. For example, when Emma parries an attack, power builds up in Koo, allowing him to unleash powerful techniques called Blooming Arts. These are performed by pressing a specific combination of button prompts, similarly to how some attacks are performed in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

The special techniques range from stunning a group of enemies with vines, exposing them to a flurry of attacks, or creating a large spider lily to leap onto and perform a downward attack. Time can slow down when selecting a technique, similarly to selecting a command to activate in a turn-based RPG, giving you some time to think.

Emma and Koo each have a skill tree. They’re each designed to complement and influence the other character’s actions. As the bond between the pair increases, the number of skills they can equip grows, which allows for experimenting with different loadouts and synergies.

These loadouts pair well with another mechanic that involves Spirit Stones that allow you to stack katana effects that trigger when Emma performs a parry. It’s also possible to focus primarily on ranged weapons, or even opt for stealth, commanding Koo to take the lead during combat instead. Beast of Reincarnation seems to offer many customization options to tailor the experience to your own personal style when approaching combat encounters.

Lastly, there are three difficulty settings. Aside from the standard one, there’s a hard mode for an extra challenge, and story mode, having a much more forgiving parry window. Plus, enemy damage gets reduced. If you’re not used to the intensity of an action RPG, the latter could be a great option to get acclimated.

Beast of Reincarnation Development News

Beast of Reincarnation was announced in June 2025 with a reveal trailer. Since then, Game Freak has shown the game a couple of times, providing a gameplay overview and some more story and combat snippets when announcing the release date in February of this year.

The game’s conception, however, took place six years ago. The idea was pitched by the game’s director, Kota Furushima, as part of Game Freak’s own initiative called “Gear Project,” which is designed to consider and then develop ideas to create “new experiences unlike anything before.”

Speaking to Polygon, Furushima said that a small internal team is leading the project, handling “creative direction, production leadership, technical problem-solving, and overall project management.” The actual development is being done by “several dozen trusted external partners,” but Game Freak is still overseeing the entire project.

“I would say that every single thing about putting this game together has been a challenge,” Beast of Reincarnation’s director told GameSpot. “It’s something new, it’s been something we’ve really been striving for. But it’s very different from other titles I’ve worked on. It’s hard to even compare it, in that sense.”

Of course, the project is quite a departure from the Game Freak catalog we’ve grown used to. Furushima understands the importance Beast of Reincarnation has for the company, showcasing an intention to get off the beaten path and face a different challenge. But the game is also of personal importance for the director himself.

“I think, as a creator, it’s really important to me, too. The idea of kind of having this concept of it at first then gradually seeing it take shape and take form–it’s really exciting,” Furushima told GameSpot. “It’s something that I find very motivating. Game Freak will continue to do new and exciting things, I presume. It’s very important to the company. But it’s also very important to me as a creator, again, to see kind of my idea–my baby–take shape in the real world.”
