Fallout 5 remains one of the most anticipated RPGs in development, and Bethesda has made it clear that the next mainline entry will have to account for some major developments across the franchise. The long wait for another single-player Fallout game has been difficult to ignore, especially as the series has experienced a massive resurgence in popularity thanks to Amazon’s live-action adaptation. While Bethesda continues supporting Fallout 76 and working on several other projects, the next numbered entry is still years away.
One of the more interesting questions surrounding Fallout 5 is how Bethesda intends to handle the growing relationship between its games and the television series. Unlike many video game adaptations, Amazon’s Fallout isn’t simply retelling an existing story. It takes place within the established universe, introducing new characters and events that become part of the franchise’s larger history. With Season 2 expanding into New Vegas territory and Season 3 also in the works, the show’s story has become increasingly important to the future of Fallout as a whole.
Fallout 5 Will Be Set During or After the Amazon TV Show
Bethesda’s Todd Howard has confirmed that Fallout 5 will recognize the events of Amazon’s Fallout television series, establishing that both projects share the same continuity. In a statement to BBC, Howard explained that the show’s developments would influence the next mainline game. His response was straightforward:
“In short, yes. Fallout 5 will be existing in a world where the stories and events of the show happened or are happening.”
Guess the games from the emojis.
Howard also explained that Bethesda is taking those developments into account while planning Fallout 5. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean characters like Lucy MacLean or the Ghoul will appear in the game, nor does it confirm that any specific physical setting for Fallout 5, just a chronological one (during or after the show). Howard’s comments establish an important detail: whatever happens in the show won’t simply be ignored when Fallout 5 eventually arrives. The two projects are part of the same universe, and Bethesda is approaching them accordingly.
Meanwhile, Bethesda’s recent restructuring has brought some significant developments for the future of Fallout. As part of Microsoft’s most recent Xbox reorganization, Obsidian Entertainment was placed under Bethesda’s leadership, although the developer will retain its creative identity and existing management. Obsidian is confirmed to be working on another Fallout game in collaboration with Bethesda, marking a major development for the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas. This is separate from Fallout 5, which Bethesda has confirmed is currently in pre-production.
Of course, Fallout 5 still has a substantial wait ahead of it. Bethesda’s immediate priority remains The Elder Scrolls 6, which is being developed alongside the next Fallout using Creation Engine 3. In the meantime, the franchise has plenty of other activity, including continued Fallout 76 updates, the upcoming Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters, and the next season of Amazon’s Fallout series.
