A BioShock fan claimed they found a sealed PC copy of the game that contained labeling not seen on any games in over a decade. Originally released on Xbox 360 and Windows PCs in August 2007, BioShock was later ported to the PS3 in October 2008.
As the first entry in 2K’s fan-favorite FPS series, BioShock took players to the underwater city of Rapture, a dystopian metropolis where otherworldly monsters call home. The game’s introduction subsequently gave BioShock a reputation as a title that captured audiences within the first five minutes of gameplay. BioShock and its sequel, BioShock 2, were subsequently remastered via BioShock: The Collection, which was released on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in September 2016.
BioShock Fan Buys Sealed PC Copy for Next to Nothing
Although stores like Goodwill can sometimes offer gamers some incredible bargains, one user stated they found quite the deal in an unlikely place. On the BioShock subreddit, a user named No_Distance_3320 posted a picture of a sealed PC copy of BioShock. The OP claimed that they purchased this sealed copy for just $2 at an Amazon returns bin store. The game was still sealed in shrink wrap, with only small scuff marks on the outer wrapping. What is interesting about the sealed copy of BioShock in question is the Games for Windows branding label, which was used over a decade ago for specific PC titles. The Games for Windows brand was previously used by Microsoft from 2006 to 2013, with its start date coinciding with the launch of Windows Vista. Along with being an attempt to compete with Steam, Games for Windows was intended to communicate to players that Xbox 360 accessories would work with games that had this label.
Despite being commonplace during the late 2000s and early 2010s, Games for Windows has long been discontinued. In short, the modern Microsoft Store and Xbox branding have since succeeded Games for Windows. Additionally, other Reddit users pointed out that some PC titles initially sold under the Games for Windows brand cannot be played due to digital rights management (DRM) that can no longer be activated. However, No_Distance_3320 stated that the outdated DRM will not be a factor for them, as they stated they had no plans to break the packaging seal on their $2 PC copy of BioShock.
As for the BioShock series, the franchise has not seen a new entry since the 2013 launch of BioShock Infinite. Although BioShock 4 has had a troubling development, 2K CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that he was feeling better about BioShock 4 during a May 2026 interview. As of this writing, 2K has not officially revealed if BioShock 4 was in its current development pipeline. Given that BioShock fans have long been eager for more news, it remains to be seen what 2K’s plans are for the future of the franchise.
By comparison, the first BioShock game is still receiving support from dedicated users. A new BioShock VR mod allows players to explore Rapture on supported headsets, with additional support for motion controls that allow players to freely aim and move around.
