BioShock Movie Producer Finally Gives an Update on the Film’s Release Window

The BioShock movie is still in progress and may release around the same time as BioShock 4, according to the film’s producer. Fans have been waiting for a screen adaptation of the beloved FPS for well over a decade, and despite a long, uneasy silence around its current iteration, it sounds like things are in motion. Details on the BioShock movie are still few and far between, but those working on it say they’re anxious to finally bring it across the finish line.

News that Netflix was making a BioShock movie adaptation first broke in early 2022. At the time, all fans had to go off of was the fact that it was a feature-length film, not a TV series, and it would adapt the first game. Since then, audiences have learned it’s being directed by Francis Lawrence, known for The Hunger Games series, and that screenwriter Michael Green, who worked on Logan, was attached to the project. Beyond that, though, specifics have been scarce, but now there’s a bit more to dig into.

BioShock 4 Leak Reveals New Location and Character Details

Over six years since the game was first announced, new leaks reveal key location and character details that may be coming in BioShock 4.

Netflix and Take-Two ‘Are Very Anxious’ to Get BioShock Movie Out

Producer Roy Lee told Collider that the BioShock movie is very much alive and that Netflix and Take Two are itching to push it out because they want it to roughly coincide with “some of the potential new incarnations of the game.” It’s the first update fans have gotten on the project since its director said the BioShock movie is “in a pretty good place” in May 2025. That earlier note came alongside news that a leadership change at Netflix shook things up for the film, which understandably made some fans worry about it, especially after earlier attempts at a screen adaptation failed to see the light of day.

In this new interview, Lee explained how the timeline has stretched longer than intended because of Lawrence’s other obligations. According to Lee, 2025’s The Long Walk took up much of the director’s time, and now the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping is occupying him “through at least September.” Once post-production on the Hunger Games prequel concludes, though, Lawrence will reportedly jump right back into BioShock. That may not be exactly what fans want to hear, but it’s still a relief to learn that the project is still in the works. Back in 2022, Lawrence said BioShock will break the curse of poor video game movie adaptations, so it sounds like he’s committed to making a quality film, which hopefully means the long wait will pay off.

The detail about Netflix and Take-Two hoping to release the movie around the same time as a new game is also intriguing. Lee’s wording was vague, as “potential new incarnations” could mean something like a remaster or spin-off, not necessarily a sequel. However, the BioShock series has already been remastered and 2K has already confirmed that a fourth mainline game is in development, so it’s hard to imagine that note refers to anything other than BioShock 4. As for what that means about the timeline, the latest reports claim that BioShock 4 may release around mid-2027 at the earliest, so it could be a while before anything concrete about the movie comes out.

While specifics may still be hard to come by, having a general release window to look forward to is good news for fans. Various parties have been trying to make a BioShock movie since 2008, but budget concerns and other development headwinds have kept anything from getting too far off the ground. For now, it sounds like the upcoming Netflix adaptation may finally be able to make the movie a reality. There’s still a long way to go if it is aiming for a mid-2027 release, but it’s good to know Netflix and Take-Two are serious about making it happen.
