Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies has had an excellent run, but that run is set to come to an end soon with Season 5 Reloaded’s Rex Infernus. The finale of this chapter of the Dark Aether saga will see the crew battling the Warden, visiting the Revelations house in the process. And while Season 6 could include a smaller survival map of some kind — the castle from Kowakujo would be a solid option — a large-scale round-based experience not being present has many already writing it off as an afterthought. However, Treyarch has the opportunity to add something even better than a new map with the final season of Black Ops 7 Zombies: a super Easter egg.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of Super Easter eggs, these are essentially final steps or secret unlocks available to those who completed every single main quest within a specific Zombies game. BO2 introduced the idea with its navcards, BO3 expanded it with the unlockable RK5 starting pistol, and Black Ops Cold War offered players epic rarity on their starting weapon for completing all the quests. However, the undisputed king of super Easter eggs remains Infinite Warfare Zombies, a mode that Treyarch didn’t even develop. And with current Zombies lead Kevin Drew once sharing that he’d attempt to top the work of Lee Ross and the IW Zombies team, it’s hard to think of a better chance to deliver on that promise than BO7 Zombies.

A Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies Super Easter Egg Would Have a High Bar to Overcome

While not everyone loved Infinite Warfare Zombies — its cartoony look, playful tone, and different feel from Treyarch’s work meant it wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea — the vast majority of the community has recognized its success with the super Easter egg concept. For completing all the main quests up through Beast from Beyond, players unlocked a bonus boss battle that remains one of the toughest in the entire history of CoD Zombies. And after completing this extra boss battle, players were showered in rewards; a bonus, fully voiced playable character, a new camo to chase, and Director’s Cut mode. This alternate mode of play added all Wonder Weapons to the box, spawned players with 25,000 points and all perks, and allowed box pulls to come pre-Pack-a-Punched.

Naturally, when Kevin Drew shared his dream of outdoing Infinite Warfare Zombies, fans were excited. Perhaps his vision would mean an even more memorable hidden boss battle that plays on the deep Aether story lore, an even deeper version of Director’s Cut, or something entirely new. Unfortunately, fans have yet to see what exactly Drew’s vision is. Drew and Ross interacted way back in 2022 following Black Ops Cold War’s somewhat lackluster rarity buff and a handful of emblems failing to come close to what IWZ accomplished. It can be assumed that Treyarch simply didn’t have time to create the Super Easter egg it wanted, as the studio was thrown onto Vanguard Zombies and then MWZ with little breathing room — not to mention the development of BO6 Zombies alongside these side modes. History then repeated itself with BO6, as Treyarch had to develop back-to-back Black Ops releases, meaning BO6 had no Super Easter egg unlock whatsoever.

Though Treyarch hasn’t been able to let its foot off the gas pedal for several years, the gap between BO7 Zombies and CoD 2028 is poised to be its first real “break” in a long time. Having the proper 3 years of development time for CoD Zombies should allow the studio to not only craft some special launch experiences for what will presumably be Black Ops 8, but also opens up the opportunity to support BO7 even after its new map drops have concluded. Additionally, map releases ending with Season 5 feels somewhat deliberate, almost as if Treyarch is planning something else for the Season 6 swansong.

What Could Black Ops 7’s Super Easter Egg Actually Be?

Assuming that Kevin Drew is finally getting a shot at a true Super Easter egg come Season 6 — something that isn’t guaranteed by any means — it will be interesting to see what exactly that entails. A bonus boss fight after the Warden could be a great move, with the studio taking a page out of IWZ’s book. Said approach would need to ensure the Warden isn’t too hard, as players would need to be able to reasonably handle two boss encounters in a row, but an easier, spectacle-focused Warden fight can avoid feeling anticlimactic if it’s flashy enough. As for what the secret bonus fight could be, there are plenty of options available to Treyarch. For example, a battle with a twisted, Dark Aether corrupted version of Dr. Monty could be an awesome way to finally give fans a taste of the Great War fight they always craved, especially if there’s a special arena for it.

A boss fight is just one step to matching or outdoing IWZ, though, as Treyarch also needs to nail the rewards for the hypothetical Super Easter egg. Sure, it could give players Legendary guns (or even Ultra on Cursed mode) at the start of a match, or maybe add every map’s Wonder Weapons and legacy guns to the mystery box. Bonus camos, emblems, and cards to chase, not to mention extra playable characters like the Chaos or Victis crews, could also be exciting. Exclusive relics with beneficial effects are yet another reward option. But above all else, the one thing the CoD Zombies community has been talking about is carry forward, which would have seen not just BO6 guns and skins, but potentially even BO6 Zombies maps, ported over to BO7.

While Carry Forward was almost completely abandoned for BO7 following complaints about the cel-shaded American Dad and Beavis and Butthead skins ruining immersion – only BO6 Zombies augment progress and quest reward skins survived – many fans wish Zombies had been exempt from the decision. It’s certainly a longshot, but perhaps Super Easter egg completion could unlock some version of Carry Forward, with Black Ops 6 guns being added to the mystery box pool for completionists and BO6 skins being restored for the Terminus crew. BO6 maps would likely need to be accessible for everyone via a Zombies Chronicles 2, as that’s a bit too big of an addition to lock behind full quest completion, but the other parts of Carry Forward could make a fine reward. It’s at least something to consider, as when combined with an extra boss fight and some other no-brainer rewards, Carry Forward elements being restored could finally allow Treyarch to dethrone IWZ as the king of Super Easter eggs.
