One of the biggest bombshells to come out of BlizzCon 2026 was the surprise announcement of a brand-new StarCraft game. While this StarCraft game left many details, aside from its 2030 release date, under wraps, Blizzard confirmed that it will forgo the series’ traditional RTS gameplay in favor of an open-world shooter. However, the company has kept largely quiet about which platforms fans can expect the game to be released on until now.

The StarCraft franchise dates all the way back to 1998, when the original RTS entry was released on PC, later being ported to Mac and Nintendo 64. StarCraft 2 followed up on this original game in 2010, but the series has been largely quiet since then. While some fans may have been hoping to see a new RTS entry in the franchise, the revival of the StarCraft IP in any form is enough to warrant celebration, even if it is still years away from release.

Blizzard Confirms New StarCraft Game Won’t Be Exclusive

As reported by Kotaku, Blizzard has announced that the upcoming StarCraft entry won’t be exclusive to one particular platform. While the BlizzCon 2026 showcase initially revealed that StarCraft will be coming to Xbox, there was no solid confirmation that the game would make its way to other platforms. This latest statement from Blizzard confirms that Xbox won’t be the only platform that StarCraft launches on in 2030, but the company hasn’t said which other platforms will be included at release.

Since Microsoft’s acquisition of Blizzard back in 2023, there have always been questions surrounding the exclusivity of new games from the developer. Long-running live-service games like Overwatch and World of Warcraft already have versions released across multiple platforms, but a brand-new game in a dormant franchise like StarCraft raises concerns about console exclusivity. With new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma redoubling the company’s exclusivity efforts with games like Gears of War: E-Day and Fable, there’s a legitimate question regarding StarCraft‘s plans to follow this same pattern.

While Blizzard won’t commit to saying which platforms StarCraft will be coming to and when, the fact that it won’t be an Xbox exclusive should help some fans rest easier. StarCraft is traditionally a PC franchise, although that was before it made the jump from RTS to open-world shooter. Still, fans can likely expect a PC release via Battle.Net for StarCraft regardless.

2030 is still a long way away, and the landscape for gaming hardware could look completely different by then. Both Xbox and PlayStation have plans to release the next generation of hardware in the near future, with Xbox’s Project Helix reportedly targeting a late 2027 launch date, and the PS6 seems likely to follow a similar timeline. Both of these consoles could be delayed amid rising RAM costs, so it’s likely that Blizzard won’t officially confirm StarCraft‘s launch platforms until closer to its 2030 release date. Thankfully, Blizzard is confident in that 2030 launch window for StarCraft, so fans can expect to hear more updates on the game in the coming years.
