Blood of Dawnwalker’s Mass Effect-Like Save Carryovers Give Its Future Massive Potential

The Blood of Dawnwalker is taking a few bold leaps that could make it a standout new RPG, and one of the most exciting confirmed features is that it’s taking inspiration from Mass Effect‘s save carryover system. Developer Rebel Wolves has been busy sharing details about the core features that make The Blood of Dawnwalker a new IP worth keeping an eye on, and gamers who were fans of Mass Effect‘s save system might have another great reason to check out the game when it arrives in September.

There are a lot of games coming out in September that look well worth the time, but The Blood of Dawnwalker has the potential to be one of the biggest surprises of the year. Rebel Wolves was founded by ex-Witcher 3 devs, and the rookie studio knows that it has to set itself apart in order to truly standout in an industry as tough as the gaming world. One of the most intriguing features confirmed for the game is The Blood of Dawnwalker‘s timer that forces players to carefully choose which quests to complete before the 30-day limit runs out. Every mechanic featured in the vampire-fueled RPG hopefully presents the right recipe to kickstart a longer series, and if so, Rebel Wolves has prepared in advance.

Blood of Dawnwalker Sounds Like a Total Nightmare for RPG Completionists

Blood of Dawnwalker turns time into a finite resource, and this unique mechanic will take time for completionists to get used to.

If The Blood of Dawnwalker Spawns a Larger Franchise, Taking Inspiration From Mass Effect’s Save Carryover Will Be Great News for Fans

Mass Effect may not have been the first game to allow players to transfer saves between entries, but it revolutionized the mechanic and made it feel like it was the future of gaming. That wasn’t the case, though. Mass Effect‘s save carryover system is incredibly complex, so it’s not surprising that so many developers haven’t adopted it. Sidestepping this kind of save mechanic during production is understandable, but that’s also what makes The Blood of Dawnwalker‘s use of the feature so exciting.

It’s been a while since another game has tried to emulate what Mass Effect did, and it’s even more compelling that it’s a brand-new studio with a debut game (and potentially franchise) on the line. Rebel Wolves could have easily played things safe with The Blood of Dawnwalker‘s mechanics, but features like the 30-day timer and the save carryover are teasers that the studio is willing to try out some complex stuff in order to get the audience’s attention.

The Blood of Dawnwalker’s Developers Thought About Save Carryover From the Start

Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz recently spoke with Eurogamer about how important the “whole cycle” was when planning out The Blood of Dawnwalker‘s story. He was a bit vague about what he and the rest of Rebel Wolves want to see happen in potential future Blood of Dawnwalker games, but the fact that there are already plans put in place for a larger story is exciting.

When you know what you want to say in the next games and where they lead, it’s easier to plan the story for [the first] game and to put some events and story elements in which will be the hooks for the next things which will happen. If you are not thinking about it, then later you have a problem, because you start the next game, you have some ideas for the story, and you start to think, ‘Okay, I will move the saves for the players and what kind of decisions I should predict, and how should it be connected?'”

The save carryover is all part of a larger plan, and that’s great news for the players who could potentially become longtime fans. Playing a choice-based RPG and then jumping into its sequel, only for your past choices to not carry over or have any real impact on the story, can be deeply frustrating. It sometimes makes a sequel feel like all that work and decision-making was for nothing. If The Blood of Dawnwalker gets a follow-up, players will have the reassurance that their choices actually mean something and are laying the groundwork for the next chapter.

It has already been made crystal clear that choices in The Blood of Dawnwalker matter deeply, so it makes sense that Rebel Wolves would want to plot hole-proof its narrative as much as possible early on. The studio has The Witcher 3‘s beloved reputation giving it an extra push, and that is bound to inspire devs to make sure that expectations are met when it comes to crafting strong stories.

Rebel Wolves Is Right to Think Ahead When It Comes to The Blood of Dawnwalker’s Franchise Potential

It might seem presumptuous for a brand-new studio to go ahead and add a save carryover feature, but that extra work is going to pay off in a big way if The Blood of Dawnwalker turns out to be a hit. Even if Rebel Wolves’ medieval vampire tale happens to be a standalone game, being too prepared is better than not being prepared at all. The Blood of Dawnwalker‘s release date pits it against several serious contenders, but something like a save carryover could potentially convince certain gamers that it’s the title worth investing in, since it shows that a player’s decisions are truly going to be honored moving forward.

The Blood of Dawnwalker featuring save carryover may not be the Mass Effect-related news that gamers were expecting, but it’s another great example of just how influential BioWare’s sci-fi series has been. Waiting for a Mass Effect 5 update has been mind-numbing, and there isn’t any end in sight. Even though The Blood of Dawnwalker is far from a sci-fi adventure, its fascinating approach to in-game choices and familiar save system hopefully resonates with Mass Effect fans who have craved a unique new RPG.

Protagonist Coen’s combat mechanics also change depending on whether it’s night or day. Daytime combat is more sword-focused, while the night wakes up his vampire powers.

Seeing how The Blood of Dawnwalker fares against games like Marvel’s Wolverine and Control Resonant is going to be interesting. There are a lot of special features that could put The Blood of Dawnwalker in the spotlight, but only time will tell if Rebel Wolves is able to stick the landing.
