It’s just been confirmed that Hasbro has officially canceled the Dungeons and Dragons single-player action-adventure game that was being developed by Giant Skull. Giant Skull’s Dungeons and Dragons game was announced last June and was being headed up by the studio’s founder, Stig Asmussen.
A graduate of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Stig Asmussen has had a fairly lengthy career in the video game industry. One of Asmussen’s first credited roles in the realm of video games is as a 3D artist on 1999’s Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. In the 2000s, Asmussen moved over to Santa Monica Studio, where he worked as the lead environment artist on the first God of War, and then the art director on both God of War 2 and God of War: Chains of Olympus, as well as the creative director of God of War 3 following Cory Barlog’s departure from the studio. More recently, Asmussen worked at Respawn Entertainment, acting as the game director for both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Stig Asmussen’s Dungeons and Dragons Game Has Been Canceled
In early 2024, Stig Asmussen announced the formation of a brand-new independent video game studio named Giant Skull. The studio’s first project was said to be a AAA single-player game powered by Unreal Engine 5, and in June 2025 this game was revealed by Hasbro to be a “gameplay-driven, story-immersed, action-adventure game” set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe.

According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Giant Skull’s Dungeons and Dragons game has been officially canceled. The statement provided to Bloomberg by a Wizards of the Coast spokesperson is as follows:
“We assess concepts at every stage of development. While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship.”
Bloomberg also reached out to Stig Asmussen himself, who told the outlet that “things are good at Giant Skull,” suggesting that this cancelation hasn’t jeopardized the studio too much. It’s unclear if Giant Skull has any other projects currently in the works. As for Hasbro, the company currently has a handful of games announced, and presumably some others secretly in development as part of Hasbro’s ongoing plans to produce more games in-house.

Back in May 2024, Hasbro announced that it was investing $1 billion into its own gaming studios. At the time, these studios consisted of Atomic Arcade, Invoke Studios, Skeleton Key, and Archetype Entertainment. Skeleton Key’s horror project was reportedly canceled in February 2025 and Atomic Arcade was shut down in February of this year. Archetype Entertainment is still hard at work on its debut game Exodus, the Mass Effect-like Sci-Fi RPG coming from former key members of BioWare. Invoke Studios announced Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons at the Game Awards 2025. Interestingly, Warlock is also being described as a single-player action-adventure game set in the dark fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons.
