The sequel to the 2021 open-world survival game Breathedge has entered early access on Steam and has already gained over 80% positive reviews from players. Breathedge has been compared to games like Subnautica, and its sequel, which is currently available on Steam and Epic Games Store, appears to build on the same design philosophy while taking the franchise further into deep space.
The first game also has very positive reviews on Steam and has been among the top choices for fans of single-player, open-world survival games. Interestingly, Breathedge is currently part of the Epic Games Store’s weekly freebies, giving fans until September 3 to claim it at no cost.
Breathedge 2’s Early Reviews on Steam Are Promising
Released on August 31 as part of Steam’s Early Access program and on Epic Games Store, Breathedge 2 has been reviewed by hundreds of players so far, with its average rating currently sitting at 85% positive on Valve’s platform. In terms of player count, SteamDB data suggests that Breathedge 2 has reached over 5,000 concurrent players at its peak, which is impressive for a single-player indie game with no multiplayer aspects.
In terms of gameplay, Breathedge 2 falls into the same category as its predecessor. It features an open-world map set in deep space, requiring players to explore it in search of salvageable items and useful resources. Environmental hazards and alien life forms will hinder the process, but players will be able to overcome these challenges by building new devices and acquiring new skills. Those who have played games like Voidtrain will likely be familiar with Breathedge 2‘s theme and atmosphere, though RedRuins Softworks’ open-world title focuses more on resource management and crafting than combat.
The early access release seems to be the best opportunity for those looking to grab Breathedge 2 at its lowest price. Developer RedRuins Softworks said, “Early Access launches with a discount and at the lowest price the game will have.” That said, players should know that the pre-1.0 version of Breathedge 2 offers limited gameplay. According to the developer, it comes with about 10 hours of campaign content, along with some space exploration. Those who want to get more out of their journey, however, might need to wait until Q1 2027 for the game’s first major update. That is when RedRuins Softworks will add interesting features like a personal ship and new locations.
Based on Breathedge 2‘s development roadmap, RedRuins Softworks plans to release the game sometime in Q1 2028. Until then, the team will continue adding new features through regular updates and fixing potential issues via hotfixes. One of the important features currently missing from the early access version is building. Breathedge 2 is supposed to be an open-world base-building game that allows players to establish and customize a settlement in deep space. However, RedRuins Softworks plans to add building in a future update scheduled for Q3 or Q4 2027.
