Sony has never been afraid to change the PlayStation 5‘s hardware behind the scenes, as evidenced by the PS5 Pro and other iterations of the console, including a new unannounced one. Since the console launched, the company has introduced different internal components, revised its cooling solutions, and eventually released new versions of the system that made the original launch model look increasingly different. Some of those changes have been obvious to consumers, while others only became apparent after someone opened the PS5 console up.
The PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Pro are the clearest examples of how much Sony can change while keeping the same basic console family intact. Internal revisions can bring different motherboards, cooling hardware, and component layouts without necessarily delivering a major change to gaming performance. Another behind-the-scenes hardware adjustment wasn’t exactly unexpected, but given how close the generation is to an end and reports of PS6 production being slowly worked on, it is an interesting change.
New PS5 Slim Consoles Entering the Market
A new tear down now appears to have revealed another unannounced PlayStation 5 model, with console technician and modder Modyfikator89 examining hardware built around a new EDM-051 motherboard, as first reported by VGC. The teardown reveals several changes inside the system, including a CR2032 CMOS battery that is now much easier to remove and replace. The motherboard itself has also been redesigned with a different internal layout, suggesting this is more than a simple component swap. It’s worth noting that PlayStation did not announce these changes before the consoles began hitting the market, nor does it seem to intend to, despite being a solid overhaul of hardware.

The battery change could be one of the most interesting additions from a long-term ownership perspective. Earlier PlayStation 5 hardware can make replacing the CR2032 battery considerably more involved because of where it sits within the system, while the new design reportedly makes it much more accessible. One possible explanation is Europe’s push toward more easily replaceable batteries, as a Nintendo Switch 2 console revision also changed the battery, although there is currently no confirmation that Sony made this particular change specifically to comply with European regulations. Sony may also simply be optimizing the hardware for manufacturing, maintenance, or future production.
The EDM-051 motherboard isn’t the only part of the PlayStation 5 receiving attention. The tear down also identifies a newer, lower-cost HDMI retimer implementation, while Sony has apparently revised the console’s liquid-metal cooling solution again. The new approach more closely resembles the system used by the PlayStation 5 Pro, and the heat sink itself has also been redesigned with different construction and materials. These changes could improve thermal efficiency or reduce manufacturing costs, although there is currently no evidence that they translate into better gaming performance.
For existing console owners, the changes don’t appear to represent a reason to upgrade their PS5 on their own. The more interesting question is what this hardware suggests about Sony’s ongoing production strategy. The EDM-051 teardown provides evidence of a significant internal redesign, but until Sony officially identifies the hardware and explains its purpose, the reasoning behind it remains unclear.
