The Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Card Game has officially released its first numbered serialized cards in English, and the cards are already fetching prices upwards of $15,000. The serialized cards debuted with the release of Yu-Gi-Oh‘s Magnificent Monsters expansion.
Trading card games have become a lucrative market in recent years, owing to increased collector interest and rising secondary-market values. The Pokemon TCG is in the midst of a major boom as the franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary, with the Ascended Heroes set and Prismatic Evolutions set producing some highly sought-after cards. Magic: The Gathering has also extended its reach to new audiences with a variety of crossovers with popular brands, including recent collaborations with Marvel and The Hobbit. Now, Yu-Gi-Oh is throwing its hat into the ring with the release of its first serialized cards.
Yu-Gi-Oh’s Serialized Cards Are Selling For High Prices
Yu-Gi-Oh debuted its first serialized cards with the release of the Magnificent Monsters expansion on September 4, which introduced new Grand Master Rare cards. The set contains 18 different types of serialized cards based on iconic Monsters used by Yu-Gi-Oh‘s main protagonists, such as Dark Magician, Elemental HERO Flame Wingman, and Kuriboh. Early sales have already seen several variants of the Grand Master Rare cards selling for high prices, with Grand Master Rares of Kuriboh – Multiply and Favorite HERO Flame Wingman selling for roughly $15,000 on eBay. The first Grand Master Rare version of “Dark Magical Curtain” sold for an even higher price, fetching an incredible $25,000 on eBay.

Yu-Gi-Oh fans likely already knew that collectors would be sent into a frenzy over the game’s first serialized cards. The original release of the Japanese serialized cards saw similarly high price tags, with one Japanese game store reportedly willing to pay roughly $6,700 USD for the serialized Dark Magical Curtain. Dark Magical Curtain was also expected to be the most expensive of the original batch of Grand Master Rares, due to the popular Dark Magician Girl appearing on the artwork of the card. Fans have also calculated the incredibly low chances of pulling a Grand Master Rare from Magnificent Monsters, only expected to appear once every 881 boxes.
The expensive Yu-Gi-Oh cards take a page from something Magic: The Gathering has done for years. Wizards of the Coast first officially introduced serialized cards to its long-running TCG in 2022 with the release of The Brothers’ War, which included 500 copies each of 63 different “retro frame” Artifact cards from throughout Magic history. The TCG has since regularly included serialized cards as the biggest chase cards from each expansion, including Magic‘s Secrets of Strixhaven set debuting a full-art version of Emeritus of Ideation inspired by older tournament promo cards. Numbered cards have also been a mainstay of sports cards since the early 1990s.
The serialized cards in Yu-Gi-Oh‘s Magnificent Monsters set are just the beginning for the beloved trading card game. The similarly named Magnificent Maestros set will officially launch in November 2026, featuring headliner cards based on the Monsters used by Yu-Gi-Oh‘s most iconic villains. The expansion will add another 18 new Grand Master Rare cards to the game, including one serialized chase card based on Seto Kaiba’s Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Yu-Gi-Oh fans are in for an exciting conclusion to 2026, with some of the priciest cards in the game’s history hitting store shelves.
