Adrian has been writing, critiquing, and thinking about games since he first picked up an N64 controller many years ago. These days he writes reviews, news, and features for Game Rant and believes games should be held to the same artistic standards as books, movies, and television shows. When he’s not writing for Game Rant, Adrian writes even more reviews for Sirus Gaming and likes to get nerdy about tech and retro games at HackerNoon. Outside the gaming world, he spends plenty of time enjoying movies or listening to every genre of music under the sun. Follow him on Twitter for nonsense tweets likely related to Dragon Ball Z, or check out Breadhouse Records for some tunes.
Following plenty of fan outcry, Treyarch has enabled cross-platform multiplayer between the PS4 and PS5 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 after the feature was missing from launch. The original Call of Duty: Black Ops duology, which initially launched on the PS3, recently made its surprise debut on modern PlayStation consoles, bringing the entire Black Ops saga to current platforms.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 PS4 and PS5 Players Can Now Play Together
The official Call of Duty Updates Twitter account posted on July 11, 2026, that PS4 and PS5 players can now matchmake with each other, addressing one of the biggest issues PlayStation fans had with the new Black Ops 1 and 2 ports at launch. Additionally, the Twitter account announced that Season Pass holders can now join games with non-Season Pass holders in both games, which is a welcome fix but an odd omission to have at launch, given that this was never a problem in any Call of Duty title prior to these releases. The CODUpdates account notes that the PS3 versions of Black Ops 1 and 2 cannot join PS4 and PS5 lobbies or other platforms, which is to be expected, as the PS3 is a 20-year-old console and most of its player base has probably already migrated to either of the newer consoles by 2026.
