Call of Duty Cheat Maker Hunted Down In Real Life by Activision

Activision has taken its fight against Call of Duty cheats into the real world, locating a person associated with cheat provider Elocarry in Ohio and personally delivering a cease-and-desist demand. The unusual delivery is part of Activision’s expanding Call of Duty anti-cheat efforts, which now target businesses selling cheats in addition to the players using them.

RICOCHET has been Activision’s main answer to cheating for years, combining server-side detection, account security measures, gameplay checks, investigations, and a kernel-level PC driver that has been a bit controversial with fans. That system has continued evolving as cheat developers find new ways around existing protections, with the Modern Warfare 4 beta representing its latest major test. The current beta requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, while Team RICOCHET has also been changing detections and enforcement throughout the test period as it gathers more data. Even with those robust systems in place, Activision now appears increasingly willing to attack the problem outside the game as well.

Modern Warfare 4 is Already the Best Call of Duty in Years

After spending a weekend with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta, it’s safe to say it’s set to be the best entry the series has seen in years.

Activision Takes Call of Duty Anti-Cheat Fight to Someone’s Front Door

On August 28, the official Call of Duty Twitter account published footage from what Activision says was a real visit connected to Elocarry, a known cheat maker. The recording shows a representative arriving at an Ohio home, approaching the door, and speaking with a man whose face is blurred. After being asked about the paperwork, the representative explains it comes from attorneys at Activision and contains a cease-and-desist demand. The man is then directed toward the attorney’s office contact information included in the documents. Activision says the visit happened during the Modern Warfare 4 closed beta and was part of a larger Call of Duty cheat provider takedown. Readers should note, however, that this was not an arrest.

Elocarry is also far from Activision’s only target as it expands anti-cheat measures, both virtually and in real life. The publisher reports it has disrupted more than 375 cheat reseller operations, delivered more than 80 cease-and-desist demands, and shut down over 30 vendors, although the time frame is unknown. Activision has also warned that litigation remains an option when cheat sellers refuse to cooperate. That approach attacks cheating from a different angle than standard account bans. RICOCHET may be able to deal with players already using unauthorized cheat software online, but legal action can make the business of creating and selling Call of Duty cheats much more difficult in the first place.

Player reaction across social media platforms like Reddit and Twitter has been largely positive, though plenty of skepticism remains. Some fans like seeing cheat providers face consequences outside the game and believe publicizing these actions could discourage other sellers. Others argue that the real measure of success is whether Ranked and public matches actually feel cleaner as a result. There is also debate over how effective these tactics can be against cheat sellers operating outside the United States. While bodycam-style footage is useful as a deterrent, it will matter little if the Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer experience is disrupted by cheaters who may not fear being served by Activision because of jurisdictional circumstances.

Activision’s strategy increasingly appears to involve attacking cheating from both digital and physical directions to create the fairest multiplayer environment it can. The timing is especially important with Modern Warfare 4 moving through its beta period ahead of its October launch. Activision says the Elocarry action is not an isolated case and has promised additional enforcement where necessary. Whether these efforts ultimately make a noticeable difference in matches remains the bigger question, but the message to cheat sellers is increasingly clear. Selling and making Call of Duty cheats can now bring Activision’s anti-cheat campaign all the way to someone’s front door.
