Call of Duty has officially generated more than $40 billion in lifetime franchise revenue, cementing Activision’s shooter as one of the most commercially successful properties in gaming history. Asha Sharma announced the latest Call of Duty milestone just days after Modern Warfare 4 launched to some of the series’ strongest player reception in years.
The massively popular shooter’s journey to $40 billion began with the original Call of Duty in 2003, but the series truly transformed with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, quickly becoming a gaming phenomenon. Infinity Ward’s 2007 shooter moved the series away from its original World War II setting and helped establish the fast-paced multiplayer progression, perks, custom loadouts, and killstreaks that would define Call of Duty for years. World at War introduced the now-staple Zombies mode soon afterward, while Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and Black Ops 2 cemented the series into the annual blockbusters fans know today. By October 2024, Activision said Call of Duty had sold more than 500 million copies, making it the best-selling first-person shooter franchise ever.
Call of Duty Has Generated $40 Billion Since 2003
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the official $40B figure on Twitter, congratulating Activision on Modern Warfare 4 and calling the release “one of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history” and the $40 billion total an “incredible milestone.” As of now, Microsoft hasn’t broken down how much of that money comes from premium game sales versus Warzone, Call of Duty Mobile, DLC, battle passes, or other in-game purchases, but it’s clear that the total is still growing at a rapid pace. Activision previously reported more than $30 billion in lifetime revenue and 425 million units sold in 2022, meaning the franchise added roughly another $10 billion in just over four years.

Perhaps the clearest evidence of Call of Duty‘s enduring appeal came earlier this year when Activision brought the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 to modern PlayStation hardware in July, and players showed up for it in enormous numbers. Alinea Analytics estimated that Black Ops 2 sold around 8.2 million copies that month, while Black Ops added another 3 million. Granted, those are analyst estimates and not Activision-confirmed figures, but they still put Black Ops 2 among the 10 best-selling games of 2026 in the US months after release. Call of Duty just proved that it no longer makes money just by convincing players to buy something new every year, as millions of fans are still willing to buy the games they loved more than a decade ago all over again.
Looking more recently, Modern Warfare 4 launched in October after a rougher patch for Call of Duty, but early player sentiment has been much more positive than for several recent entries. Its campaign briefly reached a 94% positive Steam rating during early access, while the full release currently sits around 77% positive among English-language reviews. Infinity Ward’s return to a more traditional cinematic campaign, alongside multiplayer and DMZ, appears to have restored some goodwill, even if Microsoft has yet to announce official sales numbers.
More than two decades after its debut, Call of Duty has grown substantially through new premium releases, Warzone, mobile games, seasonal content, and increasingly valuable older titles, helping explain the franchise’s enormous commercial footprint. The franchise has remained flexible, even at its lowest points. Reaching $40 billion shows how extraordinarily successful the formula has been, but the next challenge will be keeping players interested without relying forever on the Modern Warfare and Black Ops names that built most of that empire, and if rumors prove true, Call of Duty‘s next era could be coming sooner rather than later.
