Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is the next installment in the long-running first-person shooter franchise, but when it releases on October 26, it will be leaving millions of gamers behind. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is being developed by Infinity Ward and will continue the rebooted story of Captain Price that started back with the 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Even though the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles released in 2020, the Call of Duty games have continued releasing for PS4 and Xbox One. That will change when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 hits the scene in October, with the game only confirmed for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is Skipping PS4 and Xbox One
Sony has sold over 93 million PS5 consoles at last count, but that’s still far off from the more than 117 million PS4 units that have been sold over that console’s lifetime. Considering this, it’s safe to assume that there are millions of gamers still playing on PS4 that have yet to upgrade, and those individuals will unfortunately be missing out on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. While this is bad news for gamers that have yet to upgrade from PS4 to PS5, or any of the other platforms MW4 is coming to, it’s probably for the best. By ditching old and outdated hardware, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 can better take advantage of modern platforms and deliver what will be the first true ninth generation CoD experience. With it being six years since the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S launched, many are likely happy to finally see the jump happening.

That being said, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 leaving last-generation consoles behind comes at an inconvenient time. Thanks to the ongoing RAM crisis and various other global issues, PlayStation 5 consoles are more expensive than ever before. The same is true for Xbox consoles and PC hardware in general. Nintendo is also increasing the price of the Switch 2. This means that diehard Call of Duty fans that have been waiting for the series to truly move on to new platforms will have to pay more than they would have otherwise, which is a bummer, to say the least.
Call of Duty: Warzone is Shutting Down on PS4 and Xbox One
Modern Warfare 4‘s release isn’t the only way that Call of Duty is leaving PS4 and Xbox One gamers behind this year. It’s also been confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone is dropping support for PS4 and Xbox One later this year, shortly after the launch of MW4. The first season of Warzone tied to Modern Warfare 4, likely to launch in November, will be the day that the popular battle royale is shut down on older platforms. Again, this is likely better for the game’s health in the long-run, but it’s potentially devastating to gamers that have yet to upgrade their consoles.
With Modern Warfare 4 skipping PS4 and Xbox One and Warzone ending support on the platforms, it’s time for Call of Duty fans to move on to more powerful hardware. Future Call of Duty games will almost certainly keep the focus on PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S, so any of those consoles are safe bets.
