Today, Activision revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the next major installment in the franchise. It’s also the first game in the series to skip PlayStation 4 and Xbox One since the franchise started releasing entries on those consoles. And as Call of Duty fully transitions to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (and Switch 2), its popular battle royale spin-off, Warzone, is also ditching the old consoles. Later this year, Warzone will no longer be playable on PS4 or Xbox One.
On May 28, Activision quietly announced plans to begin shutting down Call of Duty: Warzone on the older consoles in a large blog primarily dedicated to Modern Warfare 4. As with past Call of Duty sequels, shortly after MW4 launches on October 23, it will be integrated with Warzone. But because MW4 is skipping PS4 and Xbox One, Activision is starting the process of shutting down Warzone on those older consoles.
“As part of this transition, Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will no longer be playable starting with Season 1,” said Activision in a newly posted blog. “Beginning June 4, the game will no longer be available for new downloads on those platforms, though existing players can continue playing until Season 1 launches. Certain items, such as Call of Duty Points bundle purchases, will no longer be available on those platforms.”
Activision says that on June 25, Call of Duty: Warzone‘s in-game store on PS4 and Xbox One will close. And then at some unspecified point shortly after MW4 launches on October 23 and Season 1 starts, Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will shut down and become completely unplayable.
Players who have properly linked their platform accounts to their Activision accounts will be able to keep all their progress and unlocks once they leap to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC. Activision also confirmed on its support site that all past Call of Duty games will remain playable online on PS4 and Xbox One.
While I do understand that supporting Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One—consoles that are now nearly 13 years old—was likely causing the devs technical headaches, the timing of this news is not great. We’ve spent the past year or so watching console prices (and PC prices) go up, up, up. A PS5 in 2026 now costs more than it ever did before. Players who are still enjoying Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One might not be able to financially upgrade to the new machines, leaving them stranded as Call of Duty moves on.
