Capcom Keeps Winning As Resident Evil Outsells Final Fantasy

Capcom Keeps Winning As Resident Evil Outsells Final Fantasy

Some publishers release good games that sell poorly. Some publishers release bad games that sell surprisingly well. Capcom is currently in the rarified position of shipping games that are both very good and selling like gangbusters. Fans have felt the wind at the Resident Evil maker’s sails for a bit now, and the latest round of financial data from the Japanese company backs it up.

In its latest earnings report, Capcom revealed that Resident Evil Requiem has sold an additional one million copies, bringing its year-to-date total sales over 8 million. What’s more, the recently released Pragmata, a sci-fi shooter about a little girl robot that was delayed for years, has already sold 2.5 million copies. That’s impressive for a game that turns each combat encounter into a computer hacking puzzle, and great news for one of Capcom’s few new franchises.

But much of Capcom’s action is in its back catalog. The company revealed it sold 23.81 million games last quarter, compared to 14.16 million units sold during the same period last year. That’s not bad at all when you consider 2025 had Monster Hunter Wilds and a series of Switch 2 launch ports. The company ranks its games by how well they sold over the quarter, and while Pragmata was number one, 2023’s Resident Evil 4 was number two.

In fact, seven of the top 10 highest-selling Capcom games last quarter were older Resident Evil entries. Devil May Cry 5, out in 2019, was number four with 129,000 new copies sold. Part of that is due to the Netflix series. Part of it is due to the game repeatedly being on sale for less than $10. But it also speaks to the broader health of Capcom’s franchises, the old ones and the newer ones.

In fact, Resident Evil as a series has now sold 213 million copies since it began in 1996, making it the third-best-selling Japanese gaming franchise ever behind Mario and Pokémon. It narrowly edged out Final Fantasy, which used to hold that position. I’m sure Square Enix fans would love to bottle the magic powering Capcom’s current unbeaten run.
