Actor Charlie Day voiced Luigi in 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and reprises the role for this year’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Now, Day has said he would be interested in returning again to the role to be in a movie adaptation of the spooky game Luigi’s Mansion.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Day said he would be “thrilled” to come back for a Luigi’s Mansion movie, though he was clear he has no idea if such a project is actually going to happen. In any event, Day said Luigi’s Mansion is “such a fun game” that could make for a compelling movie.
“Not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids, but it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun,” he said. “It does seem like it would make a great movie, but I am not… They don’t put me in charge of movie studios and for good reason. I got no idea.”
The Luigi’s Mansion series debuted in 2001 as a GameCube launch title. In the game, Luigi travels through a haunted mansion to find ghosts and catch them with a vacuum cleaner. A sequel, Dark Moon, was released in 2013 for the 3DS, with a remake of the original game coming to 3DS in 2018. Luigi’s Mansion 3 was released in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, and it’s the latest entry in the series.
Nintendo has said it wants to have a steady cadence of new movies based on its franchises, but it remains to be seen if a Luigi’s Mansion film could be part of those plans.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases on April 1, with the live-action The Legend of Zelda film coming in 2027. There are no further Nintendo movies that have been announced yet, but a Donkey Kong film is rumored.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is tracking for a massive opening weekend, with the latest estimates saying it could bring in $200 million worldwide for its first weekend.
