Chrono Trigger Celebrating 31st Anniversary with New Merch Release

Square Enix has officially revealed a set of special merchandise coming for the 31st anniversary of Chrono Trigger, celebrating the beloved RPG with gorgeous new keychains. The sci-fi time-traveling RPG from Square Enix quickly became one of the most iconic games on the Super Nintendo following its 1995 release, winning over the hearts of fans and critics alike. Chrono Trigger has been hailed not only as one of the best RPGs ever made, but as one of the greatest games of all time as well. The RPG has also stood the test of time, receiving a multitude of re-releases.

Chrono Trigger has been brought to a variety of new consoles since its original SNES version, making the game available for more players. The RPG received its first port to the PlayStation in 1999 in Japan, just weeks before the launch of its sequel, Chrono Cross, while the port later arrived in North America in 2001. Chrono Trigger has since been ported to the Nintendo DS, PC, and mobile devices, and was also made available on the Wii through the Virtual Console service. Now, Square Enix is celebrating the 31st anniversary of the game with a set of exclusive new keychains.

10 Hardest RPGs By Square Enix, Ranked

With plenty of RPGs under its belt, it’s no surprise Square Enix has made many highly challenging titles, even in default difficulty.

Square Enix officially unveiled the One Mark Collection of Chrono Trigger keychains to celebrate the game’s anniversary. The line of accessories features two variants of each member of Chrono Trigger‘s playable cast, with both an idle stance and attacking pose available for a total of 14 confirmed designs. The post also teased a mystery 15th keychain that would be available as part of the set, though no official details were given about the special accessory. The keychains are set to be released via Japanese gacha machines for 500 JPY, containing either a rubber strap or a metal clip version.

The keychains serve as an excellent homage to Chrono Trigger‘s lovable cast of characters, though many fans may have a tough time getting them. Square Enix did not make any official announcement regarding the international availability of the keychains, only confirming the Japanese gacha release. The limited release of the keychains also does not appear to include any options for online purchase in Japan, likely only available via gacha machines. Collecting specific characters could also quickly become expensive for fans with the high number of different variants available in the set.

Chrono Trigger‘s 31st anniversary celebration comes as the future of the series is largely unclear. The previously mentioned Chrono Cross currently stands as the last fully new game in the series, only launching Chrono Trigger‘s DS remake and ports in the following years. Square Enix was rumored to be developing a third game in the series in the early 2000s, tentatively titled Chrono Break, but it was reportedly canceled before any official announcement. However, the return of the iconic RPG series hasn’t been far from the minds of fans.

The return of the Chrono series has been a popular request from fans eager to jump back into the franchise’s sci-fi world. Beyond a full sequel, many fans have pushed for Square Enix to remake the original Chrono Trigger, in the same vein as Square Enix’s multitude of recent Dragon Quest remakes. Chrono Trigger co-creator Yuji Horii has even addressed the possibility of a remake, suggesting that he was considering the idea in the wake of the recent HD-2D remakes of the first three Dragon Quest games. Chrono Trigger fans may yet have hope for the long-awaited revival of the iconic Square Enix RPG.
